What is the best swap for a 282 Manual? And WHY is it best? (Page 1/1)

Hi, Guys,

I haven't seen any discussion about this in quite some time. It seems pretty obvious to me that it needs to be a relatively low torque, high rpm engine.

The first engine that came to my mind was the 3.4 TDC: an easy swap, well documented. But the days of finding crate TDC's seem to be long gone.

My second thought was an Ecotec LNF....but that engine is not a rev'er!

So, what are your thoughts on the matter....and WHY?

This one is really just thrown out for fun...so please don't anybody get their panties in a twist over someone's (STUPID) opinions!

TIA,

Larry

I would go with a turbo or superchaged Ecotec. Fast, reliable, strong, still decent availability, and pair it with the matching 5 speed transmission instead of keeping the 282, since it is very old now, many parts are no longer available for it, and the gearing of the F23 that comes with the Ecotec is likely more suited for the engine anyway.

The 3900 would be really good- and it redlines at 6500 rpm. 240 hp and 240 lb/ft......Won't add weight (Actually may take a bit off)

Also, it is the last iteration of the 60* GM V6......

There's been a fair amount of positive experience with V-8's and 282's. If you want to trade RPMs for torque how about a 302 SBC. Don't recall seeing that swap done but late 60s Z-28 Camaros are pretty bad axx.

Yes, but someone who babies a V8 Archie kit to drive it to a car show to pop a hood showing off a "V8" is very different from actually hammering the gas and revving the engine. The F35 trans bolted to an Ecotec is far more likely to survive spirited driving, plus spare parts are more readiliy available- hence my suggestion

The 3900 is a good idea too. Beautiful motor, but tight fit!
