88 Headlight issue (Page 1/1)

Strange thing after I rebuilt the motors and installed new gears/pins, passenger side is perfect, driver side will not come up but if I turn the know a little then it will go up and down just fine, it just sticks the first time after being down for a bit. is there a place to adjust zero position as it acts like it doesn't know what to do until the knob is turned?

It might be binding, someplace.
Mine was acting strangely, and I discovered a crack in the plastic gear. It would bind up on the motor gear, and stop the motor in mid-travel.

See my Cave, Gen 2 HL Motor

Rebuilding Gen2 Motors is first mistake for most. Can get New Motors that solves shattered "pins" and more problems for 30+ year old motors.

May "look simple" to fix them but is not and often have problems right now or month to a few years later depending how much you drive at night etc need using HL.
Example: You likely put new Derlin "pin" and gears, worse metal gears, but that just moves the "weak" part to the output shaft that breaks where shaft goes thru the metal piece. You see this if motor(s) run and do nothing for ~ 5 sec when Module Timer shuts off.
Shaft fail and more, See https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/128600.html

If that isn't the problem now...
If/how you fix and adjust the motor's Thrust BB at bottom can cause binding etc too.

Beside problems w/ iffy rebuilt motors, can have other things binding and module just shut off power to 1 or both motors.
Like you have to reinstall the lifts assembly after working on the motors then now the lifts are misaligned and binding with the doors, hood or both.
If you didn't pull the lifts, can still have problem even if no-one else messed w/ them.

My dad had/has a similar issue after rebuilding his, turns out the brushes were installed 90 degrees on one side so they weren't making enough contact with the commutator. So sometimes he has to "prime" his headlight before driving at night, the brushes in his have started to wear in properly though, so sometimes even after sitting it works fine, other times, not so much.

Does it open fine with the hood open?

the contacts are contacting the stator just fine, and this happens if the hood is open or closed. I think I am going to take the bucket out and see if it is binding somewhere. thanks all for the suggestions
