DIY 12 Volt Car Battery with 18650s (Page 1/2)

Has anyone built there own car battery.....being I was at the auto store and saw the old lead acids are now like $200.

I am working on a small one for my motorcycle, complete with BMS.

⚠️ Warning: DIY doing this can burn a car down or worse.

The whole charging system is design for lead batteries.
While you can make LiIon w/ BLM BMS w/ balancing etc that tries emulating standard lead battery, all it takes is 1 iffy cell to fry off and cause a big fire you can't stop.

BLM BMS mostly stops charging if 1 or all cells reach 4.2v (for LiIon) because Many balance the pack but others don't Including packs for many E-tools.
BLM BMS often do not set the charge rate and other charge parameters.

Lithium Iron Phosphate is safer but not cheaper. This has different charging and output spec vs LiIon.

try Wmart Maxx. Has a good warranty and cheaper then auto parts stores.
Don't bother search Wmart Web for this. Most stores have them even many stores w/o car service.

(E2F didn't notice auto spell insert BLM)

I would not recommend using lithium Ion batteries to make a starting battery. If everything isn't matched as a system a fire could result and those type of fires cannot be extinguished. I would bite the bullet and purchase a lead acid battery from Amazon.

Even when done "right" they're a fire hazzard. Tesla fire frequency if extrapolated the way Fiero fires were, then the car would have already been banned in the US.

Is a Big reason why Fisker's A123 Systems battery supplier went bankrupt after NHTSA Battery Recall. Fisker went Bankrupt later because of that and had Sandy Flooded many cars at the port to export them.

You only maybe hear about normal and E-cars caught fires in local new as a sound bite story. GM and Others have Repeatedly and Bigger Recalls then Fiero numbers for Vehicle Fires cause from Fluid Leaks to Electric problems but you never hear most of that either.

Tesla list 8 Recalls but are "Minor problems" some likely could kill you vs battery fires that Tesla blames everything but problems w/ design and how made the batteries.

Think GM or some other has a Recall or Fighting one for EV fires just when parked... Not looking up more recalls.

So what I am hearing you say is dont try this at home?

Yes.

And don't believe morons on YT and others says they run DIY packs for cars, "power walls" or anything else.
When they have a fire, most won't post that even if fire doesn't kill them and others.

On a smaller scale there are people running them successfully on motorcycles. Of course they probably monitor them more closely. I will try that next year.

I have been playing with lithium battery technology and I am learning.

It's just a matter of knowing what you are doing.

Imagine someone approaching you and saying, "I'm going to get ten gallons of highly flammable liquid and stick it in a machine, with electricity, and heat, and drive it hundred miles an hour around town."

As theogre says, stick with a lead acid battery.
