Which starter for my 3..4L? (Page 1/1)

Starter went bad on my 88 GT with 3.4L swap. Which starter do I order? The starter for the stock 2.8 or the Camaro 3.4? The part numbers I've found online do not cross over and there is no legible P/N on it so I don't know which one to get.

(I ordered the water pump for a 3.4 for Jenny's GT a while back, but had to return it for the 2.8 pump. Don't want to make the same mistake again)

Pics of the starter I just removed are below...

Looks like your engine has a gear reduction starter. That one is superior to the starter used on Fiero engines. I would suggest replacing it with the same type of starter. They were used on Gen 3 3100 / 3400 V6 engines, among other things.

The Camaro starter will not work, because it mounts to the other side of the engine. On a Fiero, there's no room on that side of the engine to mount the starter.

So your 2 options are the original Fiero starter, or the gear reduction starter used on the newer engines (as mentioned above). A forum search for "gear reduction starter" should turn up some useful info. We talked about this in detail, several years ago.

This is the starter I installed on my Duke. It's actuallly listed for a 3800, but it will fit the Duke, 2.8, 3.4, and most any V6 that we use in a Fiero.

The newer gear starters from GM FWD V6 engines work fine.
Both my V6 and 4-cylinder have the small starter on the far right.
