Dirt in Fuel Filler Neck (Page 1/1)

While siphoning the gas out of my tank, I noticed real fine dust/dirt on my siphon tubing as I pulled it out (not sure how dirt makes its way in there).

When I took out the tank, I also removed the L-shaped rubber hose for cleaning (pictured). Would it be ok to run water or some sort of cleaner from the outside and let it run out the filler neck to flush out the dirt or would it make its way into the EVAP system and cause problems?

Hoses shown is Not EVAP but Tank Vent for Filling. Small pipe has a splice into the big pipe near the top you can't easily see.

Tank Fill and Vent lines can be clean but make sure whatever cleaner etc is clear and dry before connecting.

2 hard lines shown should be feed to and return from engine. Another small hose/line same size as line shown should be EVAP vent line.

If EVAP vent line needs flushing or air blown thru the line... Disconnect the EVAP Can. No Liquid or compressed air should be pushed into any port of the EVAP can.

⚠️ If there is crap in that line... someone "stuff the tank" on 87-88 Fiero and liquid push out to the aux tank, have rusted line(s) (for all years) or aux tank, or both.

To Test For Leaks Here: Pinch off the big rubber hose at EVAP can or tank end and blow/suck into other end. Air should Not flow unless line(s) or aux tank leaks. Best If have Mityvac etc that can suck a small vacuum, use that and watch the gauge. Vac Max is ~ 5-7inHg. Don't try to pull max vac on the pump or can wreck the aux tank. (some versions of Mityvac can blow air too. if use that output, only need 1 or 2 psi and watch the gauge.)

Thanks ogre - will do. My only concern was if the water or cleaner would indeed end up coming out of the small hose along with the larger one when I pour at the fill cap.

Poor/pump anything in the filling port you get nothing to Very little in the small tube.
The splice is often shielded as well to keep out gas going down the vent. Is so when station nozzle isn't pushed in all the way for whatever reason.
