1985 fiero gt dies when I turn it on (Page 1/1)

My 1985 gt has been running great, pulled into the drive way and put it into park and then just died on me. Now when I try to start it up it'll fire up and then die on me again. Any ideas on what it could be? Thanks!

unplug the TCC solenoid on the transmission, and see if that fixes it. If it does, replace the solenoid.

You can drive with it unplugged in an emergency, but it may cause damage to the transmission if you keep it like that.

Can try, Likely won't help.

That shows went drive then die at stop sign/light. Doesn't cause posted problem went put in park/neutral.

Not sure what else right now...

I have seen strange stuff happen. Just recently on my 3800. It had been starting fine. I had it out for a drive and brought it home and parked it. 2 hours later I go out to work on it and it won't crank - solenoid did not even click. I put a remote switch on the solenoid and it cranks. Now I suspect the park/neutral safety switch. It's a 4T60E. I disconnect the plug near the transmission and measure the resistance through the park/neutral switch to the end of the wire where it connects to the solenoid. It's 1 ohm - therefore not the switch or the wire from the switch to the solenoid. Next I connect a test light to the ignition switch side of the plug that I disconnected. I turn the key to start and the test light lights up. So there is power from the battery through the ignition switch to the engine compartment. I put the plug back together and try to start and it doesn't crank??? I undo the plug and run a jumper wire from the female side of the plug to the male side of the plug. The engine cranks! I take a small file and clean the contacts in the plug. Put the plug back together and the car cranks. Gets me how a plug that hasn't been disturbed in years suddenly develops a bad contact.

In your case, it could be that the oil pressure switch is not making when the car starts. The PCM will cause the fuel pump to run via the fuel pump relay for a short time when the car is started. This allows oil pressure to build so that the oil pressure switch closes. The oil pressure switch is in parallel with the contacts on the fuel pump relay. If this switch does not make the car will start and die. A simple way to check this is to run a hot wire (from battery or elsewhere) to terminal G of the ALDL. Stick a small nail or piece of copper wire in the ALDL to hook onto with an alligator clip on the jumper wire. This jumper wire will cause the fuel pump to run continuously. Start the car and see if it continues to run. If so, oil pressure switch could have gone bad or perhaps a bad connection at the plug.

You might try checking the condition of your battery ground cable. Fixed my similar problem.

In my case battery ground is fine. The no crank popped up again today. I unplugged the connector and used a screw driver to bend the contact inwards in the female end of the plug. Put it back together and the engine cranked.
