Gas pump only lets me put 3/4 tank(keeps clicking off) (Page 1/1)

Yes this is a weird one...I have to fight the gas pump to give me more than 3/4 of a tank and I am trying to tie in maybe another related problem..First of all the car runs like crap with the vacuum line connected that is located on top of the intake near the distributor and I traced it back to the vapor cannister .. Could my vapor canister be clogged you think? ..Check engine light also code 45..I got issues ugh..What do you think?

If your gauge is inaccurate (most likely) then you are over filling it and that will contaminate the vapor canister. Try running for a while without topping off. I had that condition when the nozzle failed to shut off and fuel spilled out the filler neck.

Gauge is inaccurate or fuel level sending unit is inaccurate and needs cleaning.

1st a Book say X gallons but often can't fill that much even when fuel pump is sucking air. GM and other setup the pump so can't suck a bit of water or other crap at bottom of tank.

IOW F-pump will such air well before the tank is dry often Leaving 1 to 2 gallons depending on tank design in question.

You Never want a Fuel and most other pump running dry and sucking air. Blocking the return line for any reason is Bad too. Because The Flow of Gas is Coolant and Lube to the pump.

Yes, Fuel Gauges often Lie.
If gauge says "empty" then "quick" test is dump the rest like going to drop the tank and measure that. If > ~ 1.5 gallons then gauge is messed up. (You don't want a gauge to read empty at true bottom of tank.)

Or gauge reads empty right but sender has problems an top of tank and never reads full. You watch how much gas when filling up.

EVAP "can" can have several issues and maybe cause engine problems. Highlights:

1. is when you force a tank to fill up. Just "topping off" a fill up after nozzle click off can force liquid up the EVAP vent line on many cars.
87-88 has the aux tank for this reason to allow ~ 1 gallon of gas more then others. (The Tank and plumbing is way different too then old tanks.)

Note: Some Nozzles "Hate" some fill ports for various reasons and click off easy. Drive some to use 1 or more gallons then try another station so hopefully get a different type of nozzle.

2. Bottom Vac Line is the Purge Line that opens some times. If this line open all the time then have a Vac Leak but often in a Small Leak and IAC tries to "fix" the leak. see https://www.fiero.nl/forum/.../HTML/143205.html#p8

3. Other Top Vac Line is Control and Never Opens. If "opens" then the Purge Valve is Bad and cause a vac leak maybe big enough to cause high idle.

Note: EVAP line in the tank does have a Float Valve that closes when full etc. This is to prevent liquid getting at the EVAP can but this valve can have rust and other crap stopping it to close tight.

Even 87-88 tank seems to have same and still have the aux tank.

Force filling isn't only thing... Liquid Gas Expands going from underground tank to vehicle tank, worse in summer, and when full can easily force liquid up the vent on 87-88 Fiero and similar designs.

Other have less of a problem here because most tanks have more "air space" for gas to expand.

I always add 0,5 gallons after the first auto shut off when I fill up. Our tanks are small enough I don't like to not have a full tank when I leave a station.
