| 3 Relays in Fiero Engine Compartment (Page 1/1) |

In many GM drawings I see a bank of 3 Relays in the Fiero engine compartment.
One is clearly labeled Fuel Pump Relay and the other is clearly listed as the Air Conditioner Compressor Relay.
I never can find a drawing that tells me what the 3rd (the one on the Left is) - think my 1996 SE had one but I can't remember.

In my 30 years of Fiero'ing, I've never seen that third relay other than in drawing in a service manual.

30 years? All models I assume. I guess it its a artifact from GM - they were going to have a 3rd relay for something and then decided they didn't need it, but didn't bother "erasing" it from the hand line art drawings (before CAD was in wide use). Or maybe it was art from another vehicle - the Fiero did borrow a lot from established GM designs.

2 relay for most w/ AC...
1 for Fuel pump
1 for AC clutch
but likely drawing shown is for 84 non AC car.
1 is for Fuel Pump
2 & 3 are for Taillights
two relays made 3rd light stop/turn light on each side to work. Look at 84 wiring. I don't have it to post right now.
GM deleted the 2 relays and only 2 stop/turn light per side function on all nochies start in 85. What 2 depends on model year.
In later years was "pointless" for GM and made more wiring issues if kept because of GT tail doesn't need the relays at all.
What there at all? Relays likely because of electric load for thermal flash can on turn signals to work right to meet FMVSS 106 requirements.
If you want more problems w/ FSM look at rear brakes... 84-86 is all copy/past from another model and many things including images are wrong. Only fix for 87 Fiero FSM.------------------

Is lights a different relay/PN? The taillights uses 2 relays in wiring for them per FSM but maybe in 1 case. Never seen an 84 to look at actual relay setup.
If true, if the relay dies then very likely can't get like others for 84...

Thanks everyone. With the Fieros's track record of some documentation being not quite right because they borrowed so much from other models, the conclusion is: There is no 3rd relay on the left, just one for the Fuel Pump and one for the Air Conditioner.

Now that your situation seems to be resolved, I'll also mention that the 88 service manual says that the Fiero exhaust manifolds are "cast nodular iron".
