12" Vette Rotors and Lace Wheels (Page 1/1)

Good evening, all,

A Looooong time ago, Rockcrawl told me that 12" Vette rotors would fit behind stock 15" lace wheels to use with '88 calipers.

Well, I took him at his word and tried it! And I am here to tell you that they do NOT fit under the '88 front wheels! I suspect it is the internal curvature of the wheels.

But I never tried to fit them under the rears. Does anybody know if they can be installed under the '88 rear wheels (or '87 or '86 wheels since they are the same as the '88 rears)?

I ask because if a 10mm spacer is used on the rears and a pair of the earlier lace wheels are used on the fronts, the difference in front to rear offsets and widths work out to keep the fronts and rears in relative alignment to the body.

And that is a combination which would allow stock lace wheels to work with '88 calipers and 12" rotors on all four wheels!

So, please, if anyone has tried to put 12" rotors under the rears of an '88 and had them clear, PLEASE tell me!

TIA,

Larry

Your statement is not Entirely correct. Yours may not fit but that is due to your style of brackets.

Several of us have designed a bracket that minimizes how far the caliper is pushed out. Having said that, mine were close enough that I had to remove the stick on wheel weights on the front 6" wheels. The rears cleared fine. Do not put the 7"wheel on the front just to get your brackets to work, you will create a feedback issue in the steering.

jelly2m8,

That would surely be optimum. If I recall correctly, I used Sluppy's adapters....but it was a long time ago!

Is it possible for you to email me a copy of the drawings for the adapters you used? Or identify a source from which I can buy them?

BTW, I am not concerned about steering kick back since I am running two turn lock-to-lock power steering!

Boy, am I glad I asked!

Thank you so much! And please do send me what ever data you are able to find!

jelly2m8,

Hmmm, I seem to have lost what little mind I had left! My Email is: imacflier at aol dot com.

My experience with 12" rotors on the front of an 88 is similar.

They will fit on the rears with no issues, and a bit of grinding took care of the front wheel fitment issue.

Olejoedad,

THANKS! I had thought I had completely lost my mind! My recollection is that the ROTOR itself hit the wheel and, therefore, no bracket could make them fit! I wonder if a thin spacer would do the trick? And mebbe provide LCA clearance for Rodney's drop ball joints at the same time?

I do not have any data on my brackets, I prototyped them using Hardwood until I got what was for me, my optimal caliper placement. From there I took the hardwood bracket, a spindle, a caliper to a machine shop and had them finalize the bolt spacing and recreate them in Steel brackets. This was many years ago now, I have no clue where that Hardwood buck even is anymore.

The Main body of the caliper clears fine, it's the Boss for the flex hose and the flex house bolt is where it gets tight. As olejoedad said, some grinding may be all some brackets need.

All I can provide you is a picture of my bracket installed, as you will see you don't have to push the caliper straight back, some creative re-clocking is all that's needed.

jelly2m8,

Thanks, it may just be that the brackets I have will work for me with some creative wheel grinding. We will have to try it and see!

Thanks again for your help!
