I was wondering why I am able to put my car in reverse while driving...Surely something is broken... Or is that normal?

If the Shifter works as design and installed by GM...
W/o pushing the shifter button... If in R can move to N then D. If in D can move to N. Or other way around. If in 1 can move to 2 D N.
If you shift to "R" in the trans w/o pushing shifter button... then shifter, cable or both have problems. This often will have problems going into P and releasing the Ignition Key Interlock.
If you push the button, nothing will stop you shifting to R or P while moving forward and that can or will break the trans. Not just old GM cars either. Ford and many others have "same problem" when fools over ride the gates and shift when moving opposite way or to P while moving at all.
