Finally got to work on my 1986 V6 SE head removal, etc. (Page 1/1)

Just got off the front cylinder head on my 1986 V6 SE. I had removed the rear one several weeks ago.
Part of the reason to remove heads is that the rear head had 2 of the bolts holding the exhaust manifold wer broken off - not sure when that happened, but it was many years ago. (I have had the car since 1999)
I decided to replace boths heads as the work involved for the rear head removal made the front one easier.
Glad I did as I found several problems with the fron, one being the heat shield nuts all missing. The other is the $4 spark plug wire not on the spark plug. ( I had my local shop do the front plugs years ago as I have fat hands and short fingers.) This explained why I had an intermittent miss.
First time doing one of these cars and found the sevarl manuals seem to leave out several steps.

I also want to replace the air cond. compressor as it has a leak.
I also found the crossover pipe is rusted out.

I see that Summit racing lists rebuilt cylinder heads for this car, any thoughts? They seem reasonably priced at around $250.00 with tax, etc.
My heads look in surprisingly good shape considering I have 150,00 miles on the engine. The problem is removing all of the exhaust bolts and redrilling.
My local machine shop will cost me more than the Summit price to redo the valves, etc.
Thanks for any advice.

You need one of these! It's a KENT MOORE J-38782 Fiero 2.8L Exhaust Extractor Kit.

Apparently Rodney Dickman now also sells a version of it.

I am aware of the kit. However, it will be more cost effective to just get some rebuit heads.

Peter, you might do a forum search on Summit as a sanity check, just to see if anyone has had issues with their heads or can make recommendations. It would be good to know if they just sub-out the jobs or have in-house experts who will do the work that have tons of experience. I was going to say you need to consider your time as well in the 'cost' of the job but on closer inspection I see you'd take the heads to a local shop. A benefit to working with a well-recommended local shop is that you establish a relationship -- with these older cars you probably will have other shop-jobs in the Future.

Did not find any reviews on this forum for the rebuilder. I called another local machine shop that the automotive shops in the area recommend, and he quoted $500.00 for both heads plus parts. He can also remove the broken off bolts. And he says turnaround time is 2 days, so looks good so far.
