Pegging Temp Gauge wire swap question... (Page 1/1)

Pegging Temp Gauge wire swap question... Ok so I have been at war with this temp gauge. Long story short I am at the point where I unplugged the 2 wires that I am supposed to swap and unwound all the electrical tape in order to get the most slack and they are still way to short to swap across....How far do I need to go to get enough slack? I was thinking maybe pull the dash speaker and get to more of the harness??? I have read so many threads on this fix and nobody ever mentions anything about a slack issue...Do you think pull the speaker?

I want to say even on the directions you are following you may still not have enough slack. I know when I did mine I didn't. I had to splice/solder in extra wire to reach.

Well Damn I hate cutting wires but I guess I have no choice...In the forum I read said cutting wires is not involved with this simple fix...ugh.. I got the speaker out looking at the wires and even if I was to dig them out it still doesnt look promising let alone routing them nicely....so annoying this gauge..wish it wasnt so important.

The gage can be kept from pegging by simply disconnecting the circuit from the ignition switch on top of the steering column.

One of the terminals has two light green small gage wires. Disconnect and insulate the terminal on the wires and you have prevented the gage from pegging.

If you want the HOT lamp to illuminate at KEY ON, run a jumper from the HOT lamp wire to the terminal on the ignition switch where the above wires were attached.

Do it the easy way and pull the 2 green wires at G2 in the ignition switch located on the steering column.

Well I ended up splicing in about a foot of wire to each and plugged them in and wrapped it up and now it is way out of calibration. the needle is way up in the cold level. It does move and does try to come down it is just off...Instead of pulling the whole dash again. I can sneak a small coat hanger and nudge it.. I havent yet but I was curious if it would hurt the gauge..

Not sure trying to "nudge" it will work, and you could just hurt something else in the process. Have you tried slightly tapping the top of the cluster with your hand to shake it up some? That has worked for me in the past. Don't go crazy.

Yeah I'll try giving it a little tappy tap. I hope that works.

If you pull the harness out taut, there won't be slack like there are with the other wires. Keep the harness close to the dashboard, and you should be able to migrate each wire just fine.

These wires won't be moving around at all, so although it's a little tight, it's totally doable.
