What causes window jerk and pop? (YouTube Video with sound) (Page 1/1)

I replaced the driver door dew wipes with no problems. Then did same for passenger side (door not original, was replaced after a wreck) but you can see and hear the problem on the YouTube video. Starting from the up position, the window seems fine going down until the last inch or so when it pops and jerks. On the way up from full down, a pop at the start and another pop and the window jerks inwards right before fully up.

I did find this mystery white plastic thingie on the garage floor after reassembling the door:

I hate to disassemble the door if I'm going to have to drive to a shop - 'considering to the Fiero Factory, where the replacement door was installed in 2006 and was fine until dew wipes were crumbling away, outer pads worn down, and glass was getting scratched. I don't know of any place closer to Bloomington, Indiana I'd trust to do the work.

When I go to the Ogre's Cave to search for how-to regarding windows, or to archived responses it seems all the image links have expired. I really need to see what's wrong and how to fix.

As always, I appreciate your advice.

John, this happened to me before.

What is happening is the rear inner door retainer for the
carpet skin is touching the (too long) retainer inside the door shell. You need to cut the tree looking retainer shorter. That’s what is catching upon the glass when going down.

Take off the carpet door skin, and lower the glass and see if the clunking noise disappears.

Please confirm back.

Can be many thing(s).

you need to pull inner panel to look watch & listen for problems.

Even the Big counterweight spring can bind w/ rust & crap making noise and popping going up down or both.

theogre and fierogt28,

Great advice! Cheered me up this morning. Easy to remove inner carpeted panel and check/correct both.

fierogt28, can you describe exactly which of the "trees" should be the short one? Has to be one of the bottom ones. Maybe count from the front toward the rear (from left bottom of passenger door as seen from inside toward the right)? Suspiciously, when I had to pull a few "trees" out of the door frame (because the old pressed cardboard backing had been on and off so many times they'd pulled out of the inner panel and remained stuck in the door frame) one of them was cut off short. I vaguely remembered one should be short but they were mixed when I pulled them out and I'd forgotten what location was correct for the shortened one.

theogre, I have a spray can of garage door anti-bind lube from an Overhead Door guy. Works great on the big coil springs on their doors. What do you think about using on the Fiero door spring?

Thank you both. I will report back but it might be a few days. Hope not that long.

fierogt28,

I re-read your comment. I take it the lower rear "tree" fastener should be the short one.

Thanks again!

Miracle cure! The lower pops/jerks fixed by using a shortened "tree" push-in fastener at the lower rear position.

Window jerk near the full up position still there. I imagine not going to be as easily fixed . . ? I'll try to put the new YouTube video here: https://youtu.be/0jSE8WvMevQ

Do Not loosen bolts etc until find whatever is wrong. Just loosen @ random often makes more problems.

Any Grease can work in the big spring.
Silicone or permatex brake grease for anything w/ plastic parts.

Warning:
The "arms" to lift/lower the window... 2 arms has a joint in the middle and can get damage and causes problems.
Look at the arms... all should be straight w/ opposite arm all the time.
But the jointed arms can move at the center causing binding or because of binding for other thing(s) w/ problems.

Once the jointed arm is "wrecked" you have to pull the glass and near everything out to fix or replace the regulator.

If you can't see look thru inside then pull the outer skin. See my Cave, Doors
