Sat for 10 years, no start? (Page 1/1)

After sitting for 10 years, 86SE V6, 90k,rebuilt fuel pump assembly all new parts, new fuel filter, new plugs rotor and dist cap. Has good spark, starts on ether, but doesn't stay running. What's next?New battery, old plugs didn't look bad, Thanks!

Have you checked for fuel pressure?

Check basics, such as fuel pressure. Yes, I know you replaced the fuel pump and gas filter, but...

[EDIT] And David snuck in there while I was typing.

I have a similar story that may help.

After sitting for 5 year plus in basement garage, 60 Catalina V8, 67k original miles, fresh battery and stale fuel. Crank but no start. Pulled a random spark plug, reconnected the ignition wire and grounded the plug with a jumper connector. When cranking with plug out of cylinder the spark was yellow. Weak coil. Replaced coil and got a bright blue-white spark.
Put plug back in head and still no start. Carb pump was working. Tried starting fluid and it fired up and would keep running on the old gas but would not start on the old gas. I drained the tank and added the highest octane gas available since this engine has a compression ratio of 10.75:1. Anything less would give spark knock. It then started and ran on the fresh fuel.

I assume since you had the fuel pump out you refilled with fresh fuel. Check fuel pressure as mentioned by previous member.

Another experience was an engine would crank but not start even with either unless it was assisted by battery jumper cables connected to another car. It would then start up instantly. I believe the tight engine due to ring corrosion against the cylinder walls was causing the starter to draw high amps starving the ignition coil from firing the plugs.

If you have a battery charger with a boost setting you could try that without the starting fluid and see what happens or check the amp draw when the starter is engaged. Just my old school thoughts.

Lol! The original post was over 1/2 an hour old, so I thought you might be on vacation or something.
Wayne's been on here for 20 years, so I didn't mention the traditional initial pressure test - the pump building pressure then shutting off.
Since it runs with ether, the injectors must be dry or not firing...

I was busy.

I had similar problems. Mine sat for 15 yearsa and would only start with starter fluid. I also changed the fuel pump assembly, fuel filter, battery, cap and rotor, spark plug and wires. Still died after a few seconds. I went ahead and changed the ignition coil, and ICM, then it finally woke up. I'm still working on it to get it to run pefectly, though. I've changed the Idle control valve, TPSsensor, EGR tube, and reset the timning already. I think I have a small vacuum leak under the upper plenum. I suspect it's the fuel regulator or near it since the idle fluctuated after I sprayed brake cleaner in there. I'll try to knock that out next week.

Rechecked fuel pump working at the filter and up to line along side battery. Gauge says fuel rail has 40 psi, seems to start more but not stay running. Next how to check harness feeding fuel rail? And if injectors are working befors pulling the plentum? Distributer was all rusty and paper around coil under rotor is all deteriated, is that a problem? How to check wiring harness for injectors and if the are working? Thanks

No. They seem to work fine even if they look terrible.

You can check the injectors with a Noid kit. Comes with assortment of noids for all makes. It will tell you if power is getting to the injector. It won't tell you if it is clogged.
