Had to get towed, won’t start, got home started right up! (Page 1/1)

Just as mentioned. Came out of gym and it won’t turn over. No solenoid click. Tried to jump it. Nothing. Battery was good. Got home the next morning it turned over.

Solenoid?

Could be but there are other things that might cause the same symptom. Battery cables clean and tight, Grounds good and corrosion free?
The power wire that goes to the connector junction (near the passenger side shock tower) on the threaded stud tight?
Another one is if you have an auto. (this one is a less common problem) Gear selector not completely in Park or Park switch faulty or sticking. There is also heat soak but I don’t think Fiero’s suffer from this.
Lastly, there is always the possibility of an ignition switch problem. (the one buried way down in the steering column.
An ohmmeter and done detective work would go a long way, especially when your car is misbehaving.

Maybe.

Starter Motor & Solenoid gets hot by engine etc and heat soaked by a Cat after and fails to work when hot.

This can happen next time you drive or wait days to months to fail again.

Is why a made a Heat Shield to block IR from the exhaust heating the starter...
Is held on by 1 bolt on AT TC Dirt Shield and tip of a starter shim.

weird, i didnt think the starter would get affected by infrared...

The other thing I'd like to mention was I driving and listen to the my MP3.....when songs went silent, I could hear a buzzing, the kind you get with some kind of electric interference. Also, the sound would cut out for a second. It did it several times that morning. Was that the alternator kicking on?

I thought the headlight motor might be running. My voltmeter gauge said I had good 14 volts. And, my battery was charged, so no electrical leaks. My fuel pump kicks on.

Just some history, this is a 3800 SC, I dont know why but I've had problems with starters, this is my third. It's like brand new.

I asked my mechanic why I these things kept failing. Exhaust is routed out the back. I thought it was because of SC was underdrived (3.5), and it was struggling to overturn the engine. He said NO.

IR heating whatever is why most heat shield are installed... Like 1 on top of most Fiero V6 to protect the distributor from the exhaust. Or the 1 large shield on low firewall block IR from Cat and exhaust heating the cabin.

Over the years I have had a similar problem twice. Both were intermittent and it drove me crazy. Once it was a bad positive cable from the battery. It looked fine from the outside but when removed and some of the insulation cut away there was a good amount of corrosion present. Replaced the cable and everything back to normal. The second time it appeared I had a bad ICM. Replaced the module and everything was fine. For several months. It happened again and replaced the module. No problems for over a year then difficulty starting and dying on the road. Weather, heat, cold didn't make a difference. Then I noticed something. There was a tap on one of the wires to the ignition coil. When I tugged on it, it came apart. That was the cause of all my problems. Fixed it and have had no problems since. I am no mechanic, but hope this may help a little.
