List of gold zinc parts???? (Page 1/2)

Im currently restoring a 86 GT, I want it to be right. I need a little help. I need a list of all the Gold Zinc (gold chromate) to gather the necessary parts. Here is my list so far,

(4) Radiator fan shroud bolts
(2) front hose clamps on the radiator
(6) rear strut tower bolts
(6) rear strut tower bolt plates

I know I'm missing some, any help would be great

The correct term is yellow dichromate.

The process used at the time was done in an alkaline zinc ating bath, followed by the hexavalent chromium chromate dip.

Most zinc plating is now done using an acid zinc bath, and the chromate is trivalent chromium.

It does not have the same look as the old processes, nor does it have the same level of corrosion resistance.

I hope this info helps you in your restoration.

For bolts, I often search on the Dorman website. Then, once I have a part number, I order from Rockauto.
Otherwise, Summit Racing has bolts.

You can get some homebrew plating kits here:
https://caswellplating.com/

I wouldn't homebrew-dip any high stress critical bolts in acid, such as strut-to-knuckle bolts, because of the risk of hydrogen embrittlement.

Hexavalent chrome still lives on (at least from what I see here in Canada) in shops that focus on aircraft parts. I guess that the aviation industry hesitates to make changes to existing parts that have been proven good.

How accurate of a restoration are you looking for? I have stainless T-bolt clamps for radiator hoses, and I like how they appear, though they're obviously not stock.

Because Chrome 6 is a big HAZMAT and cause many Lawsuits including "famous" Anderson, et al. v. Pacific Gas & Electric w/ Erin Brockovich

IOW Unlikely to find new hardware w/ this old anti-rust formula from most or all stores.

While I appreciate all the advice. Is anyone going to answer the actual question? What were all the Gold zinc parts
Gall757 OCT 20, 04:42 PM
The correct answer has to be: There are no Gold Zinc parts. The auto companies did not even know where all the yellow dichromate parts were when the feds told them to quit using them. Many fasteners were part of assemblies that were purchased by Pontiac.

Super Helpful... Im really glad you chimed in

Glad I could help.

Is anyone actually willing to help answer the question? Other than the parts listed below what other parts have the yellow finish on the metal surface?

coolant tube clamps
various brake line to body clips
look up Auveco, they have a wide range of fasteners
