Extreme vibrations and some knocking (Page 1/1)
Posfionafiero OCT 22, 10:28 PM
Got it about two weeks ago, i4 87. She starts vibrating so hard it kinda bumps it back and fourth it feels and knocks in short burst occasionally, all while at idle, doesn’t shift till close to redline and the vibrations and knocks clear up most past 30mph. Any ideas?

Two dif problems...
vibration likely an engine problem, could be "simple" problems engine mounts etc. or both.
See my Cave, Torque Strut & Engine Mounts

Late Shift is Transmission problem.
Can be short cable to a pulley next to the TBI called TV cable.
See my Cave, Automatic
Be warned that the adjuster is often has enough crap that can't move right or at all following any directions.

Or can be the governor problems inside the trans. Governor can break or get plugged w/ crap and won't shift.
If dirty,,, could DIY clean but the nube messes this up the car will be at a trans shops w/ big bill to fix you added problems.
If broken then a shop has charts etc to replace bad spring(s) or more.
But many shops may not have parts in stock for 30 year old cars.

Thanks for your knowledge base. I found that the bellows on the right side axle shaft is very distorted/twisted in shape and could create a vibration at various rotational speed of the axle shaft as it binds in rotation against itself. See atttached pics. It's defective regardless and needs to be replaced. Perhaps the easiest is to simply replace with a new half shaft. Rock Auto has them for $65 shipped to my door. The distorted rubber bellows explains the creaking as the car coasts to a stand still and varies with decay in rotational speed. And perhaps at 20 MPH it vibrates enough to create what might be similar to a screwdriver left inside the door by accident or a body panel vibrating. In either case, the shaft has to be replaced and fingers crossed that it's the culprit. I did a test drive with a microphone in the car and again in the trunk space. Trouble is, I don't have an axle shaft puller. Maybe the Zone rents them out. Zone wants $100 for the shaft.

Shazamm, this it is. Maybe it's only one picture at a time. Here's another from the front of assembly.

Has anyone experienced this distortion of a CV Boot like this one in the past? What might cause this to happen?
