Dropped the Fuel tank for nothing I think. (Page 1/2)

Well first of all, I am having a fuel pressure problem...I have literally replaced everything from injectors to the FP regulator, shrader valve seal fuel block plate and still losing pressure.... and after all that then I did the crimp the return line trick to see if it was on top or below and it pointed to the fuel pump since I was still losing pressure while it was crimped.....So ok I drop the tank pull out the sending unit and there is no 2 inch rubber line to replace....I believe this unit has been replaced from the PO because it all appears to be in great shape...and its all stainless.....This sending unit just drops right in and the return line is all stainless. I have seen in pictures the original sending unit seems to go down inside the tank. If anybody has any info on this I would appreciate it. Wish I was a better typer!!!!! My mechanical skills are about the same..lol Thank you!!! EDIT... I am doing all this also because the thing is running so rich and crappy gas mileage......Could It possibly be a stuck open cold start injector???

To sort out if the problem is in the tank put one of these on the rubber line leaving the tank, permanently. Make sure the arrow points away from the tank. Did you rebuild the fuel pressure regulator? There may still be rebuild kits available. If its faulty it will bleed down too low while returning fuel to the tank. A weak spring in the FPR will bleed down the pressure. If you need one and you're low on money a copper penny under the spring has been known to bring them back to life. Penny doesn't have to be the same year as your Fiero. Check pressure for results. No.... two pennies is not advisable. While FPR is open check diaphragm for rips or tearing. Stretch the rubber to look for ruptures. Before my swap I had a Holly adjustable FPR on my 2.8 and I added a pod gauge on the A-Pillar so I could monitor the pressure at idle,, or wide open throttle. No guessing as to whats going on. Keep us posted and try to keep this issue on one topic until it is resolved.

I forgot to answer your Cold Start Injector ? Yes a leaky CSI will cause a rich condition and drop fuel pressure. I recall plugging my line at the fuel block. It had an odd thread size flare fitting with an O-Ring on it. I cobbled something together that didn't leak.

I had issues with my pump, and had had the tank off twice to sort it out. Weeks later, it stranded me again.
I let it sit for months out of disgust.
I finally got it in the air, pulled the tank off. Pulled the ring and pump.
Looked inside the tank.
Hmm..
Why is there no gas in here?

Yup, leaky CSI can cause lost pressure engine off & run rich.
Crap inside or damage the return line can cause high pressure & run rich.

⚠️ even New F-pump check valve can leak...
V6 F-Pump uses a Pulsator not hose from factory and most replacement. Like hoses, they leak but can't see easily when true.
To test, Run the pump, pinch engine feed and turn off the key or pull power to ALDL G watching test gauge on engine.
Best if has helper because F-pump Hates anything blocking flow for any reason.

Thank you guys so much!! To be honest I am almost fed up with this thing I am ready to pull my hair out and so is my girlfriend.. This thing has caused me so much money!! I have replaced literally every bolt on sensor there is.. And cannot get this damn thing to run right...I have a whole cabinet of good spare parts..Injectors,IAC,Map,O2,EGR valve, EGR solenoid, Cap, Rotor, Plugs, Wires, Ignition Module, All 19 coolant sensors, Fuel Filter, Fuel block and Shrader Seals ,Vacuum lines, I have zero vacuum leaks and the timing is dead on. I am not even sure I want to put this new Ac Delco fuel pump in because the sending unit and pump look like new. I am really tired of bolting on new parts as well....To be honest I dont have time to find a bolt that will delete the CSI fuel line off the rail so I am ready to snip the little metal fuel line and cap it with a stupid rubber line after I get this tank back in..It all kinda makes a bit of sense now that Im balls deep into this thing....When I first bought the car not knowing a damn thing all I was concentrated on was putting the EGR system back together..Literally every vacuum lines was plugged even the cruise control wasn't working. Now it does..And I do remember splicing a set of cut wires under the intake saying we will see what happens?? Those I BET were to the CSI!!!!! So right there tells you what kind of previous owner he was!! If it is leaking or stuck open then cutting wires aint gonna do anything!! I need to pinch off the fuel supply to it....???Correct? Please somebody tell me a super quick way to plug the fuel rail!! Please any input at this point..I am tired of being conventional with this car.. It wants to get slapped around now...lol Happy Halloween

DREAD THE CODE 45 !!!!!!!!!!! Why doesn't the service manual include the Cold start injector leaking/open a possibility for code 45? I even bought the stupid filter for the purge cannister and did a vacuum test on it...Pfft u could probably use a green scotch bright lol.. oh well it was like 3 bucks from the Fiero Store.. So I will reply back on this post and get out there tonight and throw my brand new looking tank system back in ughhh... And will be checking on this post and keep it updated...

Don't give up. Consider what you've done so far as "All Good Training". I still have my 2.8 on the engine stand. I'll check and see if my CSI plug device is still with it. If so I'll just send it to you as a box of miscellaneous used parts. It may be a day or 2 before I get down to the garage to check.

Wait I just did a search for you. Click link and read throughly. Pitch that gauge and put a 1/4" plug in its place. CSI can stay, just remove the pipe. You see, all the answers are here on Pennocks Fiero Forum. You're starting to feel better already right?

SPOON !!!! That was a Excellent Thread and absolutely ditch the gauge!! now you said 1/4 inch and he said 12m x 1.25.. ? Same thing? FYI I failed machine shop in high school haa Thread sizes confuse me
