Water collecting in trunk (Page 1/1)

Hello Fiero friends. I've been noticing water collecting in the trunk of my 86 GT. not down the bottom, but only on the driver's side little horizontal cavity above the wheel well. Would anyone have a guess as to where the water is coming from? Everything else is bone dry so I doubt it is trickling down from somewhere

Suspect it's coming in over the lip around the trunk when you wash it or when the car is subject to heavy rain. Check your trunk gasket. Replace if damaged. If OK, try adjusting the stops on the trunk and the trunk latch to get a tighter seal.

With the rust spots showing thru the seam sealer I’d say take a closer look underneath..

If it's getting wet in the trunk on those top corner parts, it could be poor sealing on the D-plates or a small crack in them. See here for images. Or here. I had similar water in trunk issues (but more severe carpet soaking) from gaskets for rear spoiler (not your issue) and from deteriorated crumbled butyl ribbon seal around the D-plates to the frame.

Just my thoughts.

Thanks wonderboy. Any chance you have more info on accessing these d plates? This is the first I'm hearing of them

Gonna be doing some brake work later this evening and will see if I can remove my driver side inner quarter window to get a picture or 2. However, I believe you may have to lift up the whole rear clip (biggest rear body piece) in order to remove/repair/get total access to those d-plates (always wish I knew the real name of those things).

D-plates should be a last resort. I would first double check that the rubber trunk seal has a good 'bite' on the edges/trunk corners on the side where you see the water. It's a process to get access to those plates if I remember. Some people accidentally put pressure on the straight/flat sides closer to the trunk seal on those plates, causing a crack or break the seal on the curved side.
