Clutch Kit (Page 1/2)
T Top 88 NOV 22, 10:19 AM
Hey all, I was looking into putting a new clutch in my '88 GT this winter. It's a stock 2.8L V6 that's driven often in nice weather. Not really looking for anything super aggressive, as the car isn't driven hard, just something that would be well matched/similar to stock for the 2.8. Does anyone have a clutch kit they would recommend? I was looking at the LuK 04-088 kit that I've seen people use on here in the past. Would that be a good option, or should I look elsewhere?

Thanks!

The Luk clutch is essentially the same clutch that was installed at the factory. Or at least as close as you're going to get.

I'm probably one of the people you've read here recommending this clutch kit. I installed mine nine years ago in my daily-driver Formula, and also used the car for autocross (driven hard!) for five of those years. Clutch is still performing just fine. For a stock (or slightly modified) 2.8, there's no need to spend more money on a fancier clutch.

Something to note about the LUK kits. There was a horrible mis-pack regarding the 04-077 (4cyl muncie kit) kit this year. I called them and they said they were recalling them to fix the issue, but have instead decided to discontinue the 04-077. If you notice you are receiving a weird part this may be part of the issue. It seems to be effecting a large amount of there low volume clutch kits.

Otherwise they are a great clutch

I have about 10,000 miles on my new clutch.

I purchased Part # 54003 HD from the fiero store based on a recommendation. I drive this car daily in the summer and often in the winter when weather allows.

I’ve been pretty happy with the performance and the price was good.

My car is an 88 GT

Good luck with the replacement job.

I learned a lot about my car and myself in the process of changing the clutch.

Also I still have some random issues with my clutch slave cylinder. Bleeding it, as most folks here know, is challenging, but not impossible.

I suppose "good" is a relative term. That clutch lists for $295 at the Fiero Store... compared to $80 for the LUK 04088 clutch mentioned above at RockAuto.

Oh boy ! I bought the Luk kit from Rockauto…..don’t remember the part number but they are showing the 077 for the four speed. I kept the old one to compare when it came in….didn’t notice anything different between other than the springs on the Luk had 4 and the orig had 6. Pressure plate was the same. I’m hoping I don’t have an issue.

That's good to hear! Looks like that's probably what I'll go with then.

Good to know. Hopefully they've got it sorted out by now. We'll see I guess!

Make sure to have your flywheel resurfaced (or replaced). You want a smooth flat surface!
