Had my 86 2.8 run like 1 cylinder was not firing while driving. Parked it and could not find anything obvious. Started it cold, and it idled for 3 minutes normally, and then quit. It would not fire again when cranked. Last time something like this happened, it was the ignition module. Changed it and the problem was solved. I did this again this time, and it solved nothing. I can smell fuel when cranking the engine. I guess I am looking for any advice about where to start, before digging into this step by step. Anything anyone could suggest would be appreciated! Steve

All the spark plugs have good spark? How old is the cap/rotor/wires? Smelling fuel then the plugs may be fouled and not sparking enough. Check all grounds for sure, I always wiggle the wiring harness to see if that makes any difference looking for bad connections. Cold start injector leaking? Post up what u find

1) Test for spark with a high energy ignition (HEI) spark tester (look like a spark plug with an alligator clip to grounf it) 2) Test the fuel rail pressure with a special fuel pressure gauge (connects to the schraeder valve on the fuel rail). Run a 12V+ jumper to terminal G on the ALDL to hot wire the fuel pump. 3) Test for injector pulses with a "noid" light. Disconnect 1 injector and install the noid light on the connector. Crank the engine and make sure the light blinks.
All the tools are available at major auto parts stores. I think O'Reilly's has them all in their loaner program if you don't want to buy.

You can fit your hand in there? How are you removing and reinstalling the injector plugs??

Just a follow up to finish this thread: I bought a new ignition module and tried changing that first- no luck. Then tested all spark plug wires, tested the coil, cleaned all metal contacts for the coil base and where it fits on the engine, checked and cleaned cap and rotor- all with no spark. Then I found an ignition module under the seat of the car that I presume I bought to carry as a spare when the last one gave out. It did not look new but was in a new box from Autozone. Put it in and the car fires and runs. I guess the new replacement was faulty- will have to go back and see if they can test it, and replace if no good. I hear this happens more frequently than assumed. Thanks for the suggestions, this forum and the internet is a great source of info! I am learning how to be a do it yourselver as honest mechanics here are tough to find. Steve

Yes you have to unplug one injector to plug the noid light into the connector. Never did it on a 2.8L but easy to do on a 4.9L or 3800.
