Gas gauge is inaccurate. Did I run out of fuel? (Page 1/1)

Has anyone ran out of fuel on accident?.. Im wondering if that is what happened to me...Now before I go back to the car on the side of the road and start doing fuel pressure tests in freezing rain. I did notice last night that yes I hear the fuel pump relays clicking and hear the pump make its normal prime noise...After the prime happens I hear what sounds like gurgling in the tank....Is this a bad fuel pump or is it simply out of fuel...I'm just curious if this is a no brainer and just bring some fuel and try that first...Everything points to running out of fuel...Except If i did in fact run out of fuel the car is getting 12 miles per gallon?????did the math and that is absolutely horrible...Yes It does run really rich but 12 mpg rich????

Yep, it's a no brainer. Happens to the best of us.

Is your fuel gauge at 1/4 tank when you ran out?

Fuel gauges on most vehicles are inaccurate. More so in 10+ year old vehicles because most use resistive senders that wear etc.
Is why many recommend get fuel at 1/8 to 1/4 tank for cars and others w/ smaller tanks, < 12gal.

Sound could be out of fuel...
Just add 1-2 gallons to check.

JUST 1 - 2 because gauge maybe accurate enough but if pump, rubber hose or pulsator in it as failed then you have less fuel to pump/siphone out before dropping the tank to fix whatever. you don't have to empty the tank totally but most can't handle 5-10 gallon moving around plus is 6lb per gallon too.

Note: Fiero Gauge and/or pump pickup can see "empty" just for how you park or drive on a hill. Tank has baffles that help but driving up/down a long hill shifts liquid to lowest point and when under ~ 1/4 - 1/3 of tank you can "run out" even w/ enough fuel on level ground.
How bad depends on which setup, up or down and % grade of hill.

Plus Car Spec for nearly all brands are Total Capacity. Most vehicles you can't get last ~ 1 gallon because pump/pickup doesn't reach the tank bottom to prevent sucking crap and water. Many like Fiero have Baffle setups that won't let the pickup to reach the tank bottom. Even then many tank bottoms are big enough so ~ 1 gallon isn't deep enough to pick up. 1 gallon is small but deep when in a jug but not spend out over several square feet...

Thank you guys for the replys and it turned out to be a spark issue I believe. I tried starting fluid down the throttle body and not a single pop.. I am going to make another post about it because I can not find a post with my same situation with this it is strange. Thank you again
