Rear end wiggle (Page 1/1)

I just discovered something with my 4.9 formula. Every time I got on the gas and left off the backend wiggled. Somebody told me that I need to make the engine solid to the cradle which I did. It didn't stop it. Then looking underneath I saw the trailing arms and lateral links had rubber bushing. So I had polyurethane bushings installed. Took all the wiggle out of the rear end. The only thing I can figure is that the Cadillac engine torque is too much for the rubber bushings. Just hope this helps someone.

It may not have been due to the fact that they were rubber, but due to age and how they were cared for. My 86 and 87 have about the same mileage. 190K+. The 86 was seriously abused at one time and when I got it roadworthy was unsafe at 35 MPH. Poly bushings were installed because they were readily available and it helped resolve some of the fishtailing. There were many more issues than just bushings.

On the other hand, my 87 still has the original control arm bushings front and rear and has never had the problem you describe. Both have upgraded engines with higher torque, though not quite the torque of your 4.9.

not the same, but my 86 was having this too. my problem was tie rods. one was completely frozen, don't remember how bad the other was. i replaced both though.
