Headlights go up but not down (Page 1/1)

88 coupe, got it with bad headlight motors. Just rebuilt them and they go up just fine but don’t go down. Checked the tail fuse and it’s good. Does this have something to do with me replacing the taillights with LED bulbs?

Little or nothing to do w/ illegal LED "upgrade" But that crap has their own set of problems.

Find White Wire @ HL switch and check "12v" w/ the switch Off. HL switch can "break" 1 function and seem to work for the rest.

Likely you "rebuild" the motors and did something wrong. DIY "rebuilding" is more complicated the "everyone" posted or vendors pushing parts.

Module will kill power for 1 or both motors for anything "jamming" the lift assem.
See my Cave, Gen 2 HL Motor

Examples:
● You likely pulled the whole lift to remove the motors then reinstall and the HL "Bucket" is binding at 1 or several places w/ the door, hood, etc.
HL lift assem has 4 slotted holes for a reason and very few bothers to mark them so goes back same way. Worse, many have been removed 1 to several times in 30+ years and even if you tried to mark the things now often still mounted too low and left/right so hits door hood or both wrong.
● You did something wrong to rebuild them or motors have more problems then ground up "pins."
Can get New motors from Cardone or AZ w/ a Warranty or cheaper on Eflay etc w/ little or no warranty.

All valid concerns. I started thinking it’s the switch but ran out of time last night to deal with it. Was thinking if it were because of the leds it’d be a waste of time checking it. Reading old posts and about checking the tail fuse led me to suspect the leds.

This is the 3rd time I’ve rebuilt 87-88 motors and the previous 2 times they worked flawlessly for years afterwards. The old positions of the motor bracket nuts was rusted on as a marking and I just followed that for alignment putting them back lol. I also tested the motors by hand on the bench checking their movement and didn’t notice any issues, they just don’t even try to go down.
