GM general replacement bolts (2.8L fiero formula) (Page 1/1)

Does anyone have a recommendation for replacement bolts for the 2.8L V6? I saw some guy advertising his stainless bolt kit here, but it wasn’t comprehensive enough for me. Also, I didn’t find anything at the Fiero store.

Specifically, I took out one of the bolts for a ground strap on the driver side of my engine, and it tumbled out of my swivel socket, and I can’t find it. But, I’m just looking for one of those kits with tons of different sized bolts that GM used, so I have spares on hand.

Stainless bolts are good for decoration, such as intake bolts, but not so much on places that see thermocycling.

Stick with the proper grade steel bolts from a quality manufacturer, not made in China.

Junkyard them if you need to, they are better grade than you can purchase new from offshore suppliers.

Do you have any brand recommendations for bolts? They have bolt kits on Amazon for LS engines, and there’s a high likelihood that they’ll work for length and thread pitch, but most of them are Allen boots.

Just get an assortment of DIN 6921 flange bolts. There's also a JIS flange bolt standard, but the wrench sizes are often 1 mm off versus what we're used to seeing in the Fiero, so I avoid those where possible.

The usual sizes in a Fiero are:
M6x1.0
M8x1.25
M10x1.5
M12x1.75

Class 10.9 works for most places in a car.

ARP has some nice bolts:

They have stainless 12-point bolts that can be used on the 2.8 intake plenum. I usually buy ARP bolts through Summit Racing.

Use the search filters on Dorman and Summit websites. You can sometimes find part numbers for weird bolts on these websites.

********************************************************************************

Best way to have spares is probably to have a parts engine...

I never really bought a bolt assortment for myself; it just grew over time as I took things apart and kept the bolts, or as I did projects and kept the leftover bolts.

Awesome! I went ahead and ordered an assortment in the above sizes. I’m confident one will fit. Thanks!

I didn't do a search but maybe you'll get lucky.

You have to admit, there are plenty of fiero GM bolts still around. Engine bolts that is.

We know that you certainly don't reuse manifold bolts ever because they will break.
The fact is, GM has their bolts made for them, to their spec.

Ebay has many sellers selling bolts, but you need to buy rust free bolts.
Bolts that are TTY, those can only be used once.
Just like flywheel bolts, you buy new ones upon each installation.
The fiero V6 cylinder head bolts aren't TTY bolts, so technically they can be reused.
But there has been arguments on this board to replace the head bolts on a rebuild.
Personally, I will replace them for cheap insurance. If your building a 4-5000$ engine,
why not replace those bolts. Common sense.

There are some GM bolts for the fiero still available for engine and suspension, but can be under a
new GM part number. Some I have bought in double or even more since they are or were available
when purchased. Rodney Dickman does have some hard to find bolts for the 88.
And also the torx water pump bolts that are prone to stripping upon removal.
His bolts offered are hex. Which really is a better / simpler bolt to use for the old fashion type of guy.

Off topic, but valuable info. In my experience as a mechanic, a lot of mechanics simply over tighten bolts.
Its crazy. Its actually murder. I do believe some mechanics still don't know how to use a impact gun.
