Lumbar seat (Page 1/1)

‘88 coupe. Lumbar seat doesn’t work. Where do I start? Does it have its own fuse? Research says there’s a pump under the seat, and the bags are probably bad? No noise or anything when I use the controls. Rodney Dickman doesn’t have the bags or pump anymore so do I start looking for parts for an 88 Corvette or something?

Depending on how much you wanted to dig into it, there is are many aftermarket lumbar kits that you can buy.

You should even be able to do a little cutting and soldering (or butt splices, if you must) to hook up the Fiero controls to one of these units.

I hope this helps!

The only Fiero that ever came with Lumbar was the 88 GT. If you've got a coupe, someone likely swapped the GT seats in.
The electrical connector is normally under the center of the seat. Make sure it's plugged in and has power. I'm not sure what fuse powers it, or whether it's switched or battery.
None of the manuals have much to say about it.
Even if the bladders are shot, you should be able to hear the pump run, when you press buttons.

The lumbar seat system on the 88 fiero is really a collectors item right now.

As for a fully functional lumbar seat, today, its a blessing that some are not leaking or shot.
I own myself an 88GT with lumbar but was stored for many, many years, so technically, it wasn't
used for most of its life. I don't really use it, but just like to pump it up occasionally to keep it active.

I do believe if your a heavier, big type of guy, you risk popping the air bags in the seat. There are no more
parts for the 88GT lumbar from GM. Like Raydar said, its not really described or talked about the the GM service
manual. Not much technical info on it either.
Any mechanic that understand electrical will know what to look for, but if the air bags are leaking or have lost sealing
at the seams, its going to be a long road for a replacement.

This would be something for an 88 enthusiast to possibly have a look at reproducing or having better lumbar bags or
bladders is the correct word. But, for the exact figure that GM made was like over 600 units ?

The Robert Casey fiero book mentions how many, so I have to report back my findings on the correct produced.

But, coming back...it can be done making these again with todays technology and better quality, but most folks here,
unless the really purists owners will actually pay for such an item.
There is indeed work to remove the seat cover, and placing them inside. Once that is done, the plastic air line should
be inspected and that too, replaced for another 30 full years of service life.

Again, lots of parts can be reproduced, but at what cost, and if we know the vendor has to make a return on investment.
If they don't, that not called an investment.
