Locked Trunk key in Trunk and battery is dead!! 85 GT (Page 1/2)
Zach85GT DEC 29, 12:35 PM
The battery on my 85 GT was dead yesterday morning, Went to jump it, got it running then realized I closed the key in the trunk and that the car was also running a bit weird, Shut it off, then lost all voltage and battery power with headlights still up and trunk key in back. So after a good morning, I need to figure out how to pop the trunk lid with no key and no battery, I do still have door and ignition keys, but no battery to get to a dealer, locksmith or pop trunk.. Any idea's would be much appreciated.. Thanks!!!

If you have a small 12 volt power supply you can pop the switch off the dash and trigger it with voltage. DO NOT USE A CAR BATTERY too much amperage across the wrong thing will murder anything it crosses. Make sure all accessories are off and make sure you ground the power supply to the chassis (As the solenoid is grounded there)

It worked for me

I actually just came across a video on youtube on this and the guy was using a car battery, I totally agree with you that it will murder that switch, But what did you use for your 12 volt source ??

For 85-88

do not pull the switch. Often Won't work in dead battery car because how it operates.

use relay socket that's easy to get at under dash.
See my Cave, Trunk Release

Can jump any "12v" + to plug and ground anywhere handy.

Use your cigarette lighter to provide 12 volts, preferably not a car battery. Being a GT, it likely has the trunk popper switch. Once voltage applied through the lighter, push the switch and trunk should pop open.
I made a dedicated harness for that purpose by cutting the plug in off and old 12 volt car vacuum cleaner. Put alligator clips on other end of cut wires, and once you get the trunk popped, put the harness in your tool box for future use.

You can do the same thing with a 9V pp9 or 6lr61 battery. It's enough to energise the lock solenoid without frying anything with too much current!

I have a battery charger that works from donor car lighter to dead battery car lighter. It will not only charge the battery through the lighter, but you can activate the trunk release solenoid to open the trunk and get access to the battery.

I wonder what the amperage is for that solenoid. I assume milliamps? If so, I would imagine you could use one of the "computer memory saver" adapters:

Just so you don’t forget, make sure you have the emergency brake applied before connecting a battery to the relay socket.

Yes can use somewhat lower or higher volts to pop the trunk and why 12v is "12v" above.
The solenoid isn't picky about actual volts applied for far < 1 second is used.

For one time use just use the relay socket and ground to frame anywhere.
(84 doesn't have a relay. also Covered in the cave.)

If you think can short out w/ whatever power source, use light bulb to limit amp draw.
Even wire a 120v lamp w/ standard bulb w/ twisted wire on the plug works.

No reason to find or buy other crap that likely can't find months to years later.
Most need "instant fix" when battery dies and key lost or lock bad.

Side Note: 9v to lighter plug thing is useless on most newer vehicles because Lighter and Aux plugs are Not connected to "12v" when I-key is Off. 9v battery doesn't have enough power to run the car w/ key On or other positions and may cause problems w/ some things. Example: Many cars still have heater blower On when I-key is On that drains 9v in seconds and heats that as a short circuit if doesn't have a fuse to blow.
