High beams wont click (Page 1/1)

88 coupe, I can hold the stalk to keep the high beams on but it won’t click to keep them on. Ogre partially answered this indicating I have parts getting loose in the column and it’ll only get worse? There isn’t a switch I can replace or replace the stalk? Replacing the stalk in my S10 wasn’t that bad. Is this seriously something where I gotta replace the column??? Just to get working high beams? Lol I just did a h/l upgrade.

Ogre mentioned adjusting the switch somehow?

The high beam / low beam headlight switch is located on the column under the dash. They are available from Rock Aut0 for about USD$10.00. Search Rock Auto site for WVE 1S4840.

Before replacing the switch, check to see if it can be adjusted slightly closer to the steering wheel. The mechanism is one where there's a rod that goes through the column, and presses on a pushbutton assembly to select either low or high beam. If the switch isn't pushed in enough, it'll briefly flash, but not latch.

The opposite can be true, where the switch placement is okay, but the actuator assembly has something wrong with it. Examine it thoroughly.

and, of course - the switch could be bad.

the point is - check everything thoroughly, BEFORE throwing money at it.

Great, I wasn’t sure what part number I’d be dealing with. It’s cheap but have to pull the steering wheel and get deep in the column to change it? That’s what someone else indicated.

So I need to get into the column using Ogres guide in the cave to see this?

if you get on your hands and knees, you may be able to look along the column and see the switch, toward the...well, it's not a firewall since the engine is in the back, but you get the idea.

Arthur is right. Check to see if your existing switch can be adjusted before buying a new one.

You shouldn't have to go into the column. the switch is on the column under the instrument panel. You may have to remove or loosen the column to get clearance for your tools / hands.
