I pay tribute to mrfiero, fieroguru, Patrick and others…..
If you don’t have any Brake Pad/Caliper experience; read this thread before your next brake pad/caliper job. This awesome advice will make a very difficult task soooo easier!

I read: removing spring pins from 88 Brake Calipers? by jscott1 (02-16-2002)

I started on this path too as the GM manual says to use J-6125-1B slide hammer and J-36620 spring pin puller.
But the GM manual “Install or Connect” procedure is extremely ‘tricky’ IF you have TWO GOOD HANDS which I have one! Using jscott1 words “Does anyone know an easy method”….
Then I read: Caliper pin removal demonstration using the right tool by oneinch (11-04-2020)
WOW! Summing up this thread is to leave the spring pins alone; remove two bridge bolts; slide the bridge off from the pins (keeping the pins into the caliper body); then slide off the outer pad/spring; rotor and the inner pad/spring – done.
Putting the pads/springs back in is so easier with the pins already into the caliper body; a one hand old man can to do!

What are spring pins? You mean the slides? What are you describing, just removing the outer part of the caliper?
https://www.fiero.nl/forum/...020825-2-018420.html
Someone there mentions doing that, splitting the caliper apart by taking out those 2 bolts on the back, and then you can just yank the outer part off the pins? Its tedious but I've never had problems using a punch and a sledgehammer. Figured that as tight as the slides are the outer part of the caliper would be tight on the ends of them.

I remember that thread very well. Instead of being grateful, the OP was pissed off that a superior method of dealing with '88 calipers was mentioned. lol
Glad you agree that it's a better way! [This message has been edited by Patrick (edited 03-13-2023).]

I've only always split my calipers when doing 88 brakes. Heck I probably learned of the technique from that other thread!

First time I replaced pads, I fought those freakin' pins for... way too long. Splitting the caliper is much easier.
