I don't seem to have courtesy lights in my '86 SE. No brackets, which I assume no wiring to retrofit something else in, would be correct in that assumption ?

Short answer, you can add pretty much anything into the Fiero, just need the right parts. But you're correct.

At one point in time, I had the fortunate (unfortunate) opportunity to live near a junkyard that received a lions share of cars from the greater Fort Lauderdale area. From the late 90s through the early 2000s... there were at least a handful of new Fieros in the junkyard every week. None of them rusted, all loaded with parts with every option you could imagine. From Fiero Formulas, to loaded 88 GTs with T-Tops and air bladder seats, to 85 GTs with original fleece seat upholstery. So I've seen it all.

I saw an 84 car that had WS6 and 4.10 gears, with literally no options at all. Didn't even have speakers in the dash. Hard top, crank windows, smooth decklid, and no power door locks or mirrors. There was a block-off plate, and had fresh-air vents with the knobs under the dash. It too didn't have courtesy lights... and the only reason I know this is because I snagged the fresh air vent assembly, cables, and knobs.

But if you can get access to them, it's not a hard thing to add. I can't remember the 86 SEs... but I know my daughter's 85 has two door switches for when the door is closed. One is for "door ajar," and the other is for the interior lights. You will have the overhead dome light of course, so you can basically just wire it into that... literally piggy-back off that harness and run the wires down the A-pillars on both sides.

Any 80s car will have the correct bulb socket, and you can steal that whole harness and adapt it. I assume you have the brackets already, just not the bulb and socket? The cars that I've seen that didn't have the floor courtesy lights, still had the bracket to hold the socket... just no socket, wiring, or bulb.

Under the A pillar on the driver side is a connector that supplies key on and key off power to various accessories.

It can be accessed by removing the left front speaker.

It's plug and play with the proper stuff.

All have the brackets.
L side is molded into the fuse box trim.
R side is stamp hole in sheet metal.

To hold a "Marker Light" socket then use 168 bulb.

To see C209 where the get power & ground...
Have to pull the left speaker to look.
Get at it to plug whatever is another story.

That's good to know for other possible ideas.

I've got a light kit that comes on with +12VDC, and I'd like for them to work in tandem with the existing ceiling courtesy lighting, if possible. Does that harness work with those lights, or is it just key on/off ?

Son of a...I have no idea how I missed it the last half dozen times I stuck my head down there, but there they are. Shame about the wiring, though.

While works to most people, Courtesy Light Wiring is "Parallel Wiring" to Dome lights and not on same circuit.
See sneak path problems in my cave. Because One fuse etc fails then have weird problems cover there.

LED may have weird problems too if bat fuse blows etc. Or can fail too.

Many don't know what the holes are until you see the plug that uses the weird shape hole.

Craziest thing is that I knew what it looked like, I saw it clearly on my GT, but somehow managed to completely overlook it on my SE.

I may just piggyback on the dome lights. They are LED, but it's not just a bulb, it's a whole assembly that runs off +12VDC. It should work OK to come on when the door is open.

likely easier to do that.
try pull A pillar and/or dash trim under gauge cluster to find wires for dome light going up the A pillar.
