Any After Market A/C Replacement Suggestions? (Page 1/1)
Strumey APR 05, 10:34 AM
I am thinking about changing the entire A/C system in my 85 GT. The blower motor is very loud and the A/C doesn't blow cold. Seems like it would be easier to replace the whole system. Any suggestions?

MUCH easier to fix what you have.
PDFs of manuals here (use the 86 Service Manual)
https://fieroinfo.com/

Install a new blower - you need that for heat/vent anyway.
Then compressor etc. and recharge if that's all that's wrong.
https://www.rockauto.com/en...g,blower+motor,6916?

List of O-rings and seals. You should probably replace all because of age anyway.

The only aftermarket system I saw in a Fiero took up a lot of room in the spare tire area,
had a goofy add-on at the heater control, and didn't work.

I couldn't find any "how to fix" information on it OR replacement parts for her car.

To add to this... it seems to me the biggest issue with repairing and maintaining the system is the custom parts in the Fiero, specifically:
- Condenser
- Evaporator
- OE A/C Lines

I'm not aware of ANYWHERE that sells these parts for the Fiero anymore, so if these are damaged, you're basically screwed, or you'd better learn how to weld AC components. Anyone have a solution for this?

And to piggy back off the OP's question... is there a replacement AC compressor that we can use that isn't so massive, and does the same thing? Like... is the one in the 1988 model more effective, and can I swap it out simply by changing out the plug?

Thanks!

Bought new evaporator last year for my 88GT and fit perfectly. First one they sent was "used" and obviously a return with wrench marks. They made good on it immediately. Had AC all last summer with no leaks.

Supplier on eBay was CCSAUTOPARTS.

I also needed longer hoses and found a company in Florida who was fast and the price was right. Sent them my old set and had a quick turnaround.

Welcome to PFF Strumney.

I live in the Canyon Lake area about 20 miles west of New Braunfels. I hate to see people throw money at problems, so If you want to drive down some day, I can leak test the system and see where the problems are. As previously said, new evaporators and condensers are getting hard to come by but I know of sources for used aparts. A quality A/C shop can salvage hose ends and crimp on new hoses. The blower motor, accumulator and compressor are readily available.

On April 28-30 there is a Fiero event in Bertram, Tx. Round-Up XXIV. See the Bat City Fiero group on Facebook for details.

Send me an e-mail it you want to get together to check out your car

What are the name(s) of the AC hose places you've worked with? I've had a local hydraulic hose company do some hoses for me, and they are hit or miss depending on who is doing the work). I know there is/was one user here that was modifying AC hoses for 3800 swaps. This would be a good resource for people doing other swaps where it isn't the Fiero compressor anymore.

I'm pretty sure it was COLD HOSE

My problem here in Massachusetts was no one had the fittings to lengthen the hoses. I recall phoning everybody in the area and was getting desperate. The hoses needed lengthening to accommodate the F40 swap even though they fit when I had the V8 and Getrag.

Anyway, it was a simple slam dunk with Cold Hose. I put the entire assembly in a box and it came back with new and longer hoses. They were easy to work with.

The AC was the last step in my 2nd swap in this car. First swap was in 1999.

Once the hoses were in and it was all recharged there was a slow leak over a month or so. By process of elimination we concluded it was the original evaporator so I found the previously mentioned source on eBay. After that, it was cool all last summer with zero issues.

(BTW I'm also an S. Anderson....Steve Anderson)

I had an 88 base coupe that had that aftermarket AC unit. The original owner had it installed within months of purchasing the car, realizing that a non-AC car was a no-no in the Birmingham, Al. summer. The compressor was a Sanden and is commonly used in commercial vehicles like cab-over trucks and in small compact cars. They are still mass-produced to this day.

The last time I had hoses made I lived in Corpus Christi and can't recall the business name. One of the Ford guys I know said that this business in San Antonio can make custom hoses:
