So as the title says ive been having a strange issue with the automatic trans in my 85 GT. when i bought the car both engine and trans needed to be replaced. I ended up using the engine and trans out of my 86 gt with i have as a parts car. After getting the car running properly it came to the whole driving portion. During the first initial test drives it drove and shifted fine including kicking down into lower gears when i would get on the throttle, but now I have a strange issue. When i was taking the car on a longer drive (roughly 4 miles if that means anything) th etransmission was acting very strange, as in when I first shifted it into reverse the car "clunked into gear" somewhat violently and when I put it into drive it did the same thing. After taking off the car shifted into second gaer fine and then somewhat violently into third after roughly 200 feet in third it was like the car went into neutral the revs shot up to about 3000 and then it went back into third. On the whole drive before I brought it back and parked it during both second and third gear every once and a while the revs would shoot up before going back into the correct gear.
I dont know a whole lot about automatic transmissions so the problems have baffled, any imput you guys would have on this problem would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

What's the ATF level (checked while running and hot)?
Does the fluid look discolored or smell "burnt"?
When's the last time the filter was changed?
And then there's the TV cable... but check fluid etc first.[This message has been edited by Patrick (edited 04-18-2023).]

Yes Check Fluid. Engine running, Trans in Park, oil hot. Hot enough can't leave your hand on the AT pan as bare minimum. If oil is cold and way low, fill only to barely reach or just below Add mark then drive until oil is hot.
Low Fluid can "out of gear" as you turn, brake, etc then drive normal again in straight line on level ground.
If oil hot and above Full mark can cause Oil Foaming as have too much hitting parts that stirs air in the oil.
⚠️ AT Coolant lines can leak and dump a lot of fluid fast. Lines have near 0 PSI but flows a lot of volume as is "overflow" oil of main pump and regulator. (Works same way as Fuel Pump and Regulator has the Fuel Return line from the engine.)

What was the mileage on the trans? Could have been a bad transmission in need of a rebuild. On one of my V6s, it went out at about 160K and started slipping and needed to be replaced. If you're over 150K I'd be worried its just a bad tranny.

Yeah, CowsPatoot (a member here) runs that site. He is a big Fiero enthusiast, and a computer geek. Plus some of this stuff will get harder to find over the years - eventually shop service manuals will be lost or damaged or discarded. Digital stuff is a good safety. If you're going to be at the 40th Anniversary even in Pontiac, be sure to find him and say hello.
