Fiero Targa top? (Page 1/1)
4thfiero APR 26, 09:18 AM
Hey guys,

I was curious if anyone has successfully converted a Fiero into a targa top before...i know we can cut the tops off and do the chop top mod, but has anyone ever done a working targa top? (I had even heard there was some kind of official "kit" you could get to convert a Fiero to targa top. is that still around somewhere?)

Thank you in advance.

I've seen one, and it was a Flexible Flyer.

There is a LOT of bracing needed in the floor and sides to replace the rigidity of the missing roof side weldments.

There was, indeed, a kit. All of them are certainly gone, by now.
As Joe said, they severely compromised the stiffness of the space frame. Probably why there were/are not more of them. (I had a convertible that had a "C" channel welded below the doors, in addition to the usual aftermarket structural supports that get added. It was still a rattle trap.)

Ah gross...I don't want rattles. Alright. Ill abandon this idea.

Thanks for the input.

Bloozberry had an interesting solution. Keep the roof structure, but enlarge the opening in the metal where the sunroof went. Targa panel comes off, with more open air than the stock sunroof, but the critical roof structure is retained.

I think in large part, the reason why not a whole lot of people have done this, is because the factory moonroof is so large anyway, so there isn't a whole lot really gained by doing it. But I do agree that a Targa is quite cool, but then you run into the problem of where it goes. The moonroof sits really nicely under the hood, but a roof section might not.

If you look at the Fiat X-1/9 Bertone though, they designed it with a Targa as an option (or maybe they all had it), and the roof fit nicely behind the rear seats, which was pretty cool.
