1988 Fiero GT stock engine. Started it up today and drove two miles before the speed started dropping and I pulled it over to stop. All gauges read properly within acceptable range. The last thing done to it was the alternator pulley addition from Rodney. My mechanic moved away and the crap mechanic in town did nothing to diagnose it and claims it’s a catalytic converter issue. I replaced that less than a year ago so I doubt his diagnosis. Any thoughts of where to start??

Can you give me some more information?
When you say "all gauges read properly within acceptable range," does this mean that it's now running again properly?
Are you saying that it died all of a sudden, but it's now running again, and you're trying to figure out what caused it? (Ignition control module)
Or are you saying that it's not running at all right now?
What happens right now when you turn the key and start to drive off?
Thanks!

I'd start by checking the fuel rail pressure. This is easy to do and that will eliminate a fuel pump or fuel pressure regulator problem. The major auto stores lend out a fuel pressure test gauge if you don't have one. ------------------ formerly known as sanderson 1984 Quad 4 1886 SE 2.8L 1988 4.9L Cadillac 1988 3800 Supercharged

Out of gas? I'm serious.
Plenty of Fiero owners have been fooled by a gas gauge that still reads 1/4 tank when it's actually empty.

The gauges read normal for what they always are. So not running hot and oil pressure was fine. Car started to decelerate until I eased it to a stop. Put it on a tow truck and when taking it off car would start and immediately die. Took 3 tries to keep it running long enough to get it into a parking space. Not out of gas. Nearly full

The Ignition Control Module may've packed it in (relatively common issue)... and as mentioned above, full pressure needs to be checked.

If you can keep it running w shots of starter fluid, its a fuel issue. Fuel pumps wired thru the oil pressure sensor, if its going out itll stop the fuel pump.

I think I have a spare ICM in the garage. Replaced it last year and kept a spare on hand.

Should last a heck of a lot longer than a year. Was it an ACDelco ICM you installed? Did you put proper heat sink compound under the ICM?

I am inclined to agree that it's something fuel related. My mechanic moved away and without diagnosing the issue at all the new mechanic at that shop claimed it was a bad catalytic converter and claimed a guy walking by saw a metal flake come out the exhaust. I don't really believe this because the catalytic converter is a few months old. He had no way of knowing that and just doesn't want to mess with the car. I am scrambling to find a place to tow it to on Monday. It may just be back to my house at this point until I can find a decent mechanic in this very small town. Just in case, I am driving over there with my spare keys this morning to see if it is actually out of gas. I'm pretty sure the tank was almost full, but you know how bad the gas gauges are.
