5-Speed Getrags, what to look for? (Page 1/1)

Hey guys, I finally had a chance to go to my storage unit over the weekend. I discovered that I have two 5-Speed Getrags. One of them I know for sure is from a 1987 Fiero SE/V6 that I parted out, but I don't remember from what car the other one came from.

The one from the 87 had a lot of miles, and a cracked engine block (a piston had gone out the floor of the engine), so my guess is that the 5-Speed was likely abused.

The other one is in a crate, which I purchased from someone on here... but I cannot remember. I recall that it had something like 30k miles on it and it came from a Fiero that had been wrecked (while parked). It looks brand new, like... not even a spec of dirt on it, and all the holes have been plugged with plastic caps.

I'm sure the second one is probably "good to go," however, both of them have been sitting for at least 13 years in this storage unit. The storage unit is dry (not a lot of humidity), so I'm not worried about rust or anything... but I am not sure it would be a good idea to just install either one without checking it.

Is there a good document, guide, or page that talks about the failure points of the Getrag, if there are any upgrades I can make, and what if anything I should check or do before installing one into a car?

Thanks!!!

Muncie 5-speed service manual in PDF.

The 88 Factory Service Manual PDF also has a section on the 5-speed Getrag.

Thanks! I totally forgot that manual existed. I'm going through it... though I guess my question was more on what I should check to make sure it's good to install. This seems to be if I want to disassemble it, or know it already has problems. Still definitely valuable.

For the one that's in a crate with 30k miles... my guess is that I'll have to flush it out. The engine it's going behind is not all that powerful. Basically a 3.1 with .040 overbore pistons and a slight head deck so higher compression and 3.2 liters of displacement. So... I dunno... 170hp if I was guessing (with all the other nonsense)?

So I don't have to worry about it getting trashed (like going behind an Archie V8), but if there's something simple I can do to it to harden it, maybe I go down that path.

Not a lot to check without disassembly. (I probably wouldn't disassemble a 30K Getrag. I'd just use engine oil for the initial oil fill - because it's cheap. After it's changed, I'd fill it with synchromesh.)

If you have two axle stubs (tulips) stick them into the trans. Grab one of them and shake it up and down. There may be some movement where it's plugged into the splines.
What you don't want to see is any movement in the other stub. You should be able to shake one side up and down and not affect the other side. If the other side shakes, it indicates the differential bearings are shot.

About the only other thing to check is that the clutch arm and fork move smoothly. I've had a few that were almost bound up, solid.
If the output seals seem stiff, or are cracked, I would replace them.

Rodney has some useful pieces and info.

I wouldn't install any trans with the original clutch release bearing/sleeve.
I installed this : https://rodneydickman.com/p....php?products_id=305 when my original sleeve broke off after an easy 44,2000 km (27,500 miles): https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/146242.html
