backstory: I've got two Fieros. Both 86 - a GT that's a LONG term project, and an SE that's been driveable until last year.
I had the brilliant idea of removing parts from the GT, refinishing them, and doing the ol' SWITCHAROO on the SE. So far this has been a good plan.
I removed the steering rack from the GT. (just so there's no mistake, I know the GT is different from the SE), cleaned it up, new grease, tie rods, boots. Painted the mounting brackets.
Went to install it in the SE and - for some reason - the brackets don't want to seat all of the way to the frame. I can keep cranking the bolts, but it really feels like I'm going to break something if I continue.
Are the brackets different sizes? Do they have to be oriented a certain way?
I'm going to have to remove the rack again, anyway - I just found out that you have to "dimple" the inner tie rods to secure them. Oops. It sucks - took me hours to get it back into place.
oh! In case anyone is ever looking for the below information - the size of the bolts that hold the rack to the frame are M8 x 1.25 x 25. Mine were severely degraded and I couldn't use a thread checker on them. Took me way too much time to figure it out, and I'm hoping if I post this here, it might save someone else down the road.
