88 rear brakes (Page 1/1)

Ok, I’m in the middle of rebuilding my brakes and I’ve hit a snag that I can’t seem to find an answer to. I’ve searched the forum and read through the ogre cave and still haven’t found an answer.

When I turn the parking brake bracket on the left caliper, the piston moves out and when I move it back the piston stays out. On the right caliper, the piston also moves out but it also moves back in when moving the bracket. I’m trying to find out which caliper is working correctly and how to get the other one to work the same. Any help is appreciated.

One moves out and stays is likely bad for whatever reason.

Hard to say exactly what wrong...
Piston could bind in the shell from dirt and rust in the bore.
Piston "guts" have problems.

Can't leave it doing this even if you never use P-brake. Don't trust other that seems to work.
Without the auto-adjust can cause big problems like Main brake can "blow out" the back of piston as pads wear and piston springs drag the pads.
That in turn cause brake fade, brake failure to fires.

Well that’s not the news I was hoping for. Are the rebuilds from the fiero store reliable or is it just luck if they’ll work out of the box?

Sounds like your inner piston (there is a piston inside the piston) that should rotate to allow brake adjustment is bad. Fiero store or any other rebuilders don't rebuild the inner piston, so often the rebuilt one is just as bad or worse than the one you traded in to them.

I've seen 88 rear brake rebuild kits on ebay that include the seal for the inner piston rebuild, but they're not cheap.

So I should add that I followed the post of another user who found the seal for the inner piston for I think it was a grand am rebuild kit. I pulled apart the piston and replaced the seal, and reassembled the piston. It was after final assembly of the caliper that I found the one side wouldn’t retract when moving the park brake arm. When I had the piston apart everything looked pretty good, no rust or mess.

I just went out and messed with it a bit more. I noticed with light pressure on the piston it will move back in when turning the park brake bracket. Would it still be considered bad?

I've never heard of using a grand am seal. Are you sure it fit right? Would you please post a link to the page that talks about doing that?

It looked right and it fit nice on the inner piston. Here’s the link.
