I have a 1988 Fiero GT with 44k orig miles. i just started the Fiero this morning but before I started it i opened the oil cap to see if any oil is going up into the valve covers it felt KIND OF dry then i started it it looks like no oil is getting up there . the lifters were making noise I reved the engine and wow it made a loud fast clanking noise. so i think there is no oil getting into the top. my oil pressure guage reads at idle 40 Is that the oil pump? did i do any damage? will a normal mechanic shop be able to do the work? thanks I live in Arizona is there any shops that work on Fieros? PS. I done drive the car to car shows I start the car around once a week. please help. thanks.

Could be multiple things. Have you at least checked the oil level first?

If the 44K is real, and if you've got 40 lbs at idle, you shouldn't be having upper engine oiling issues, unless the oil has never been changed. How did it look inside the valve cover, with the cap removed? Any sludge or grime?
Actually, 40 at idle sounds kind of high, unless the engine is stone cold. I forget where the oil filter is in the chain, but it might pay you to replace the oil filter, in case there's a blockage or something odd.
Don't use a Fram. They're widely regarded as junk. I try to use Wix, Mobil1, or Purolator.

If your oil filter is clogged they have a built in bypass that will allow crappy oil to flow thru the engine but still maintain pressure. Like mentioned above Stay away from Fram filters. Also you may want to pick up an aftermarket gauge to verify actual pressure. You'll need a 1/4" brass Tee and a short nipple. Make it permanent or just for plug and play. Add (1) 1/4" brass plug for P&P.

Is every lifter rattling... or is just one clacking away? Might simply be a (temporarily) stuck lifter, having gotten gummed up from too many short running sessions without getting good and hot.

If the oil level is good, when was the last oil and filter change? (Months or Years?)
My first two cents is to drain the oil and inspect it for any 'grunge' or grit.
With No Surprises;
Replace the oil filter
Pour 4.5 quarts of fresh oil
Start the engine for 30 seconds, shut it off
Check the oil level and go forward as a baseline….
