factory stereo amp/antenna turn-on voltage...? (Page 1/1)

While checking the factory stereo out of my wife's '86 Fiero, I found myself wondering whether the antenna turn-on output actually worked. The answer is, "Well, maybe..." When I press the power button on the face of the stereo to turn it on, I get 3.27 volts at the antenna wire, and 0 when I turn it off. So, will an aftermarket amp or power antenna respond to this kind of voltage? Should it be a straight 12 volt output? Bueller? Thanks in advance - Chris

It should be 12v.

Is that a stock radio? I'm thinking it should output 12 volts, although I've never had occasion to check.
Most people who install a different radio (even a later GM radio) use the power antenna output to turn on a relay which, in turn, supplies battery power to the amp.

Thanks, Mickey and raydar. Yep, Factory Delco unit, complete with cassette player and 5-band equalizer. Probably won't ever use the wire, I don't see an amp or power antenna in the future of any car that might ever get this radio installed. Was really mostly just curious. I've still got to see if the tuner and tape player work, but at least it gives me 12:00 on the face when I hook up the battery, and NO SMOKE!

Absence of smoke is just about always a good thing.

Good luck with your project(s).

Many Factory "Radios" have problems just for age.

This wire/pin Should be "12v" can be early sign its got bad part(s).

Crack solder joint(s) to dying parts for several reasons.
Is some reason why many used "radios" are dead now or soon and why companies that sell refrub sets no long bothers w/ many types.

Example: My "radio" stopped set time or fav channels years ago and other units have problems too.

Very likely won't burn up but section of to whole unit simply won't work and likely sooner then later.
