Fiero power steering (Page 1/2)

I recently purchased an 88 fiero gt minus the engine and it appears to have a power steering conversion on it already. My question is what belt would I need on my L67 to make it work? I have the Fierorog lower alternator mount as well as his tensioner bracket. Thanks for any help/advice you might have.

If it has power steering, we need to see pictures of this as it is not common to have a conversion on these cars.

If it has a belt on it, then it is not likely one of the 15 or so GM EHPS units built and installed on an experimental basis. I have one of these units (uninstalled) but do not remember any location needing a belt. Take a look at it and see if it is one of the MR2 systems modified for use in a Fiero. Some electric power steering units have been installed but most of that system is bolted to the rack.

I'm referring to the accessory belt on the engine. I have the fierorog mounts/tensioner and had to get a different belt for the alternator/tensioner relocation in order for them to work. With that said was just curious what belt I would have to use if I put a power steering pump on the engine.

My 1994 L67 has two serpentine belts and two tensioner. The harmonic balancer has two drive pulleys. The power steering pump is still place. The outer belt drives the alternator and the power steering pumping. There is also an idler pulley plus the tensioner pulley. The inner belt drives the water pump, supercharger and A/C compressor.

Need clarification on this since the motor was gone when you bought it. Are you sure it has a power rack and pinion installed up front?

I'll second IMSA's request for pics.

I understand what the belts do and what they are for, I'm simply asking if anyone else has run or is running power steering on their L67 and if so what belt is used if they are using FieroRog mounts ( alternator relocation/ tensioner mount). I'll post pictures in a few but I'm not sure how a picture of my steering rack along with the power steering lines that run from the rack to the engine bay are going to help identify what belt I need? Maybe I'm missing something?

The reason why people are asking for pictures and details is because the OEM Fiero Steering racks were all manual, with the exclusion of the experimental ones that were not put in production (but got out into private hands).

There are also people that have setup power steering using aftermarket racks with a variety of different pump solutions, in addition to the electrical-motor power steering assist on the stock rack).

I read (see: could be totally wrong) that the 88 racks could be modified to support power steering, but I don't know how accurate that is, or if it was relegated to just the experimental racks.

So I think before people can answer your questions, they need to see your setup, the L67s accessories can be setup a variety of ways to similar positions but have variations because of the bracket solutions that were offered by different people, or made by industrious owners.

Since this is a custom application I am not sure anyone could give you a part number for the belt you need.

Best thing is to get some rope, run it around all the pulleys and get a measurement - then head off to the parts store and match it up with something they have.

That being said, as others have point out - you need to check the rack to verify that it actually has power steering. The PO may have just left the pump on the motor to take up some slack in a previous belt (that happens).

Thanks and that was going to be my next step if I was unable to get a part#. It definitely has power steering on the rack along with an accompanying hydro line running from the rack to the engine bay. Again thanks for the info.
