Hello everyone. This is my first post on the forum as I'm relatively new to Fieros, picking mine up last August. I found it in Northern Ireland so flew over and drove/shipped it back to England all in a day, like a Top Gear challenge! I've had a background in X1/9s since the age of 15 and managed to purchase my collection when they were cheap. The Fiero sits well in the garage with it's companions and is the rarest of the bunch here in the UK. Other than mine, I've never seen one before. I'm please to say that getting servicing parts has been easy through Rock Auto and so far the car has proved to be reliable. Next month it will require an MOT (12 month annual inspection) to be legal on the road and I have one issue stopping that right now. The washers have never worked.

If I put power to the pump they come to life. I've done a little research and seen that the fault could be in a circuit board for the wipers or in the switch/stalk itself. Before I start ripping everything apart, I'm hoping someone might be kind enough to give me some steps/pointers on where to go next.

CIRCUIT OPERATION
When the Wiper/Washer Switch is in LO or
MIST, Battery voltage is applied to the Wiper
Motor through the GRY wire. In Lo, the Wiper
Motor will continue to run at Low speed until
the Wiper Switch is turned to the OFF position.
When the Wiper Switch is turned to OFF,
voltage is still applied to the Wiper Motor at the
Low speed brushes through the Run/Park
Switch, and ORN and GRY wires. The wipers
complete the last sweep in Low speed. When the
wiper blades reach the PARK position, the
Run/Park Switch opens, shunting the Wiper
Motor causing it to stop immediately. The
wipers remain in the PARK position.
When the Wiper Switch is in HI, Battery
voltage is applied directly to the Wiper Motor
through the PPL wire to the High speed
brushes. The wipers run continuously at High
speed. When turned off, the wipers make the
last sweep in Low speed and park, similar to LO
speed operation.
The Wiper Motor is protected by a Circuit
Breaker. The Circuit Breaker opens if the
wipers are blocked by ice on the windshield, for
example. The Circuit Breaker resets automati-
cally when it cools.
When the Washer Switch is pressed, Battery
voltage is applied to the Washer Pump and the
Wiper Switch is mechanically advanced to the
LO position. The washer sprays the windshield
as long as the switch is held on. The wipers
must be turned off manually after the wash
cycle.

I had a similar problem on one of my GTs when I brought it to Australia. I tried changing the board but had no joy in getting the washer to work. I chased it the issue down to the switch but the problem switch is located in the column, not on the turn signal stalk.

Because the RMS (MOT) requires the washer to operate for registration in New South Wales (they never check it after first being certified for operation in Oz), I installed a momentary push button to power the washer pump on the cover under the steering column where I can reach it. It's out of the way, unobtrusive, and my knees don't hit it. If your car doesn't have the rear wiindow defroster option, you could install momentary push button to power the washer pump there beside the trunk release.

Fuses check out ok. When the ignition is on and the washer button is pressed the live wire is showing earth. Ideally I want to keep the car original and not add further wiring. Would you guys agree this is pointing to the stalk?

There was a time when Wiper washers were optional on cars. The passenger side wiper alone was also an option.

I really doubt it. The actual switch is in the upper column shroud under the turn signal switch. It is separate to the turn signal. The stalk controls the switch. (I understand that the wiper switch from an S-10 pickup will fit the Fiero column. ). It is a bear to get to. You have to remove the steering wheel, turn signal stalk, and turn signal switch. Then, you have to fish wires through the column.

See this: https://www.fiero.nl/forum/...2/HTML/088020-3.html. Pictures of the wiper switch is well down the post but you you will see it. It has 5 wires, pink, purple, white, grey, and yellow.
