V 6 transmission issues (Page 1/1)

Have a 88 Fiero GT with automatic transmission. It will not come out of 1st gear without hitting gas pedal. I changed the shift solenoid but that did not help. Tomorrow I am going to change the transmission filter and see it that is the issue. If that does not fix it does anyone have any more ideas as to what the problem could be.

Perhaps your Throttle Valve Cable needs adjustment.

I agree with Patrick - the TV cable is probably the first thing to check.

But I have to tell the story of what happened with my '88 GT and the shifting problems I had. I was having problems getting my TH125 to downshift. 3-2 was okay, but 2-1 was hard to get, and 3-1 wouldn't happen at all. The 1-2 upshift also seemed early. I checked and adjusted the TV cable according to the FSM and according to Ogre's page, which helped, but not much. I even fabbed a spacer for the TV cable to mount the cable jacket slightly further out of the transmission. It shifted much better then, but something still wasn't quite right.

I had checked the throttle cable before and thought it was operating properly - I thought I was getting WOT when I operated the skinny pedal. So it wasn't until some strands of the throttle cable actually broke ("Great Scott!!") that I changed it out. That's when I found out that apparently it had stretched during it's then 33-year life, and it was not operating the throttle (or the linkage to the TV cable) properly. I replaced it and took out my spacer (that now made it bind at the end of travel). I adjusted the TV cable again, and lo and behold, now it shifts as GM intended (and better than it had in the five or so years since I bought the car).

So... I recommend checking the throttle cable too (it has no adjustment that I am aware of) if the TV cable adjust doesn't correct the problem.

Can try TV Cable.... Maybe will help.
Late or No Up Shift is often the Governor that also runs the VSS.

Plugged w/ crap and oil won't flow right or at all.

Changing some oil and filter won't help you when governor is plugged.
DIY fixing this can be done but if Gov is bad or you mess up needs a trans shop and when they see DIY tried first is likely to cost a lot more.

Again your car Does Not have a "shift solenoid."

All the Solenoid does is to allow ECM to Lock the Torque Convertor Clutch in 3rd Gear driving > 35MPH.

TCC Solenoid not working means
1. TCC never locks same as unplug the trans.
2. TCC Stays Locked after driving then try to stop and stalls the engine. "Quick Fix" is to unplug the trans and wait a bit for stuck valve to release the solenoid.
