Rear ball joint installation (Page 1/1)

Hi guys got another question as I rebuild my suspension… I ordered rear ball joints from the fiero store so I assume they are the correct size and everything. I tried to install the metal shell (where my thumb is) and ball joint together as an assembly, but the shell is too big of a diamter to fit thru the hole in either the control arm or bracket. so the only way it works is with the metal shell installed last, on top. does this look right?

Yep that's fine, the metal shell is just a debris shield.

Ok thanks. Follow up question. how do i get the groove in the ball joint stud aligned with the hole in the knuckle? I grabbed the stud with pliers and a towel and tried to turn it but it didnt want to seem to budge.

You need a set of what are known as alignment punches:

Years ago I bought a large set of Craftsman punches and chisels and I have several of these. When doing suspension work, these tools are indispensable for getting holes to line up before trying to push a bolt through them. In your case use a punch like this in the hole and then you should easily be able to rotate or reposition the stud of the ball joint.

Many New BJ often won't rotate or move easy w/o grease.

Makers don't grease ones w/ grease fittings because:
Have no clue what grease you will use.
Doesn't have Grease getting out causing problems during storage or shipping.

Seeing your control arm is off, before you bolt the control arm in, insert the ball joint into the knuckle first so that the slot orientation is correct, slide the pinch bolt in and rotate the control arm. Or grab the very top edge as tightly as you dare with vice grips and turn it
