I am wondering if anyone has seen this on their Fieros, and if so what can be done about it, if anything. On various parts of my black plastic rub strip, the surface appears to have deteriorated and/or peeled away, leaving a bumpy brown surface

Hi, unfortunately, it's caused by the sun. It's the literal breaking-down of the plastic (as plastic does when exposed to lots of UV... like in the ocean, etc.) and results in it slowly breaking away and eroding. The only thing you can do is build the material back up. For some of these pieces, you can replace them... like the ones on the doors, quarter panels, etc... just replace them.
The ones directly on the edges of the front bumper, and the one on the rear bumper... those are actually part of the bumper themselves, and the only thing you can do there is sand it down, use a type of flexible filler, and have it repainted. I'd recommend having all those parts repainted at the same time (like the mirrors, sail panels if needed, luggage rack, etc.) just so it all matches.
I know it's easier said than done... but if you can park your car in a garage during the day, or at least park it in the shade while you're at work or something... that will extend the life of everything. My guess is if your trim pieces look like that, the interior is also pretty swollen (with things curling up and deforming). Kinda sucks... but it's life... haha...

Yeah that's what I thought, I just bought it 2 months ago, interior isn't bad at all, a little bit of interior trim warping but nothing bad.

You can buy almost all new trim from the Fiero Store... just not the ones that are part of the bumpers. :/
