Lining Up Bolt Holes (Page 1/1)
Brent7088 JUN 26, 12:48 PM
I removed the bolts from the holes shown in the pics to change out the valve cover gaskets and now having trouble lining the holes back up again.

Would the engine be freed up enough at this point to jack it up at the oil pan to raise it about 1/4" or less without damage? I could get them lined up then. Or would I need to loosen another mount somewhere else before jacking?

(Dog bone is also loose at one end)

TIA

If those holes were lined up when you took the bolts out (they'd have to be), there should be no reason why they won't line up now. Removing the valve covers doesn't involve shifting the engine's position.

It's been awhile since I've had that bracket out. I forget, but is there a third bolt (not shown) down below holding it? If so, is it loose, to allow the two holes shown to line up?

I noticed the engine did shift when I removed the bolt in front of the dogbone.

Even so, that shouldn't affect the bracket attaching to the engine... unless the bolts holding the other bracket (that the first bracket attaches to on the right side) are loose and it has shifted somewhat.

I'm thinking if the front engine mount is original, the rubber has compressed a bit over the years.

Yes, none of the engine mounts have been changed since i've owned it (I bought the car in 91 when it was 5 years old).

I'll just have to shift the engine by a hair at the oil pan.

I personally would not use the oil pan to shift the engine... but do what you feel is necessary.

Your 2nd pic. never tighten any bolt until they are all started. You will need to loosen the other bolt to get that last two in.

as far as the Engine torque strut (Dogbone), as the rest said, old compressed / collapsed engine and or transmission mounts cause that issue. Jamb a pry bar down infront of the engine bracket and roll the engine back.

Thanks everyone - after prying a bit I had a 2nd person get both bolts started and I'll just go back and forth until they're both all the way in.
