Engine cooling fan (Page 1/1)

I have 1986 V6 rescue from a backyard that I have been restoring. Its now running, I have fixed the fan wiring so it works correctly off the engine temp switch. Fan does come on when the engine temp gets hot, but when it does, it immediately kills the engine. Cannot restart until engine cools down. I wonder if anyone has a suggestion as to what the problem may be?

That is so weird! It sounds like maybe there's some kind of short which is interfering with the ECM and causing it to stall out. First thing I would do is check all the grounds... with bad grounds, I've heard that sometimes it can create a lot of issues with pulling voltage through places it should not. Make sure all the major components are properly grounded as they are supposed to be.

Do you have the service manual? There's a link somewhere that you can use to download it... or you can buy the physical one from the Motorbook Store.

And if you were to disconnect the wire that goes to the fan switch, would the engine then be able to start normally? No, this isn't a solution , but it might help determine the issue.

Thank you for your reply. I can check grounds, although I was careful on my rebuild to insure good grounds.
A couple things to add. Previous owner had cut the temp wire and grounded it to have fan running at all times. I fixed this and also found two fusible links had been removed. I replaced these.
I didn't mention that with the engine running (not hot), if I turn the AC on, the fan comes on as it should, and the engine does not die.
Also, I pulled the wire off the switch, with engine running, shorted it directly to ground. The fan came on and again did not kill the engine.
I have to think it may be as you mentioned, something in the ECM. If so, I have no clue how to daignose an ECM.

Could it be tied to engine temp? I know there is a sensor that tells the ECM the temp. Maybe its seeing elevated temp and cutting off the engine?

It's possible you didn't see my post while you were typing.

So... what happens?

No I didn't see your post before. I'll try that, it will have to wait until tomorrow.
