trouble with Fierostore fuel sender?? (Page 1/1)

has anyone installed and had trouble with the fierostore fuel sender assembly? i installed one to repair a failed level sensor, transferred the fairly new pump to the sender and installed..gauge works great...but... ever since i replaced this i have been having fuel issues, so here goes... when driving for awhile (usually about an hour) at an average of 35 to 40 mph, the fuel pump will get increasingly louder and finally cause the engine to stall, wait 20 or 30 minutes and the car will start and drive like normal. so thinking the pump was going out on me i replaced it with a new ac delco pump. pump worked great, put the car away for the winter and next spring drove it a few times and the same thing happened. replaced the pump again but didnt get to drive it much that summer..now this year it has acted up again, this time i replaced the fuel sender connector (both body and sender sides) and replaced the fuel pump relay. i did manage to check the voltage out of the relay while it was running rough and it was system voltage. test drove again, same result after same driving conditions. next i removed the sender again and rewired the complete sender, test drove the car on the highway (both interstate and secondary highway speeds) for about 2 hours with no problems, the next day i drove slower through the mountains and the car acted up again. tried a new pump (delphi pump) and now i'm fighting a low fuel pressure condition which may be the pump. confirmed with fuel pressure gauge and data from ecm. is there something im missing or is it just my turn for an ass kicking? any help would be appreciated. thanks

I bet you're getting good at dropping that tank though, eh?

What are you using to connect the fuel pump to the metal line? Submersible fuel line hose and clamps, or the original factory pulsator?

Might be a good idea to mention the year and engine of your Fiero.

Don't know if This thread is helpful at all or not.

Did you use J30R10 rated submersible fuel injection line as the coupling to connect the pump to the feed pipe? Did you use fuel injection clamps on that connection? If you have been purchasing your fuel pumps on eBay , many counterfeits have been popping up there. Furthermore most of the Chinese made pumps are questionable. I recommend and use the Bosch brand purchased from Rock Auto.
First step is to check your fuel pressure and connections to the fuel pump. Power the pump from the ALDL connector, make sure you use the right pins. Then measure the voltage at the connector? Is it 12 V? On my 3800SC I ran a secondary power line and relay to the pump to insure a strong connection during high loads. Do the checks and you will find whats wrong.

sorry for leaving out vital info...its an 87 gt...anyway the previous pumps ive been using have been purchased from a gm dealer (i work there and have access to vehicle lifts, so yeah, fuel tank removal has been easy), been using the included coupling hose that comes with the pump and both clamps, we've also had no issues using delphi pumps in the past but i guess that doesnt mean a whole lot. it's just been bugging me on how all this started after the sender replacement, i am going to drop the tank again this weekend an do some more diag on the circuitry. when bouncing ideas off of other techs at the shop one of them reminded me of a rash of bad pumps we had a while back (delco pumps)...maybe thats what is going on maybe not. the one time i was ready when it acted up i did measure the voltage at pin g and it was 12v as it stalled, i know this doesnt mean that the pump iteslf is getting 12v but at least i know the relay is providing 12v. well, thanks for the reply so far. will try to update if i find anything

F-pump and sender Ground is In the cabin and they could be Iffy or C502 on the Firewall has crap connection(s).

Weather pack "pins" get loose or "rust" and cause crap connection.
Need Tube Tool to release them. Lisle and others make the tool.

Since it is giving you problems after the sender unit install….I’d check for a short at the top of the sender….the “bulkhead “ connector. See if there is a high impedance between the connection and the ground of the sender…. Make sense ?

If this is done correctly, it shouldn't cause any issue, but it is different from the stock fiero setup.

On the stock Fiero setup, the ground for the pump goes directly from the connector at the top down to the pump and a second ground wire goes from the connector to the level indicator.
On the Fiero Store version, a single ground wire goes to a spade connector at the level indicator and the ground wire for the pump is off the same spade connector.

While the Ground inside does connect to the Tank & Pump Assembly... Both have crap connection w/ rest of the car except the ground wire.
Think more like this is a Ground only for the Sender because the case of that is often the Ground "pin."

"12V" maybe 100% and pump still have bad power...
Again... the Tank Ground is In the Cabin @ G201 and G202 but can have Crap C502 or anywhere in that wire.

well, i decided to reinstall the old gm pump i had in it and do some more troubleshooting from there... i will be checking the pass thru connector at the bulkhead as well while its on the lift. thanks to all who have replied, will post a fix when i find it
