Loud screeching from left rear wheel (Page 1/1)

I was coming back from a store and as I passed a semi I heard a loud cycling screeching......thought it was somebody's stereo (Bad musical taste- obviously)....Then I passed another semi trailer and heard it again....then along a cement wall- louder! Tried changing speed and sure enough, the cycling changed speed...

Got it home and checked wheel hub and brake temps- nothing obvious...Jacked up the rear and spun the left wheel- YIKES!! Loud and sounded like it was the dust shield. Removed the wheel and looking could not see any warping of the dust shield...Preparing to pull the caliper and suddenly spotted something between the dust shield and the disc....Flashlight confirmed it....A pebble wedged in a groove on the dust shield...used a screwdriver to remove it, then spun the hub- no noise.

Reinstalled the wheel and spun again....finally decked her and took her for a test drive- no screeching!

I just wanted to post this in case someone has this happen- check for Pebbles......(Not Bamm-Bamm)

At least it wasn't a (saber-tooth) cat wedged in your wheel well... or Dino !

Glad to hear that it wasn't a major problem

Before I even read your post, I was going to suggest this was the problem just from the Subject line.

Been there , done that before.

Thanks for sharing! I was thinking it was the dust shield. But not that it was conspiring with a rock, to darken your day.

For just a second, I thought it was my ex-GF...But she lives back in Alabama now so I don't think her screeching could reach me here....

Don't you just love it when it's something stupid like a little stone stuck somewhere??!! It could always be worse.
