Temperature Gauge (Page 1/1)
Kern AUG 01, 11:31 AM
Hello Fiero Folks,

The car is a 1988 GT. The temperature gauge has the needle stuck at about the 11 O'clock position. I have heard that these gauges have issues and have learned of a possible wiring fix to prevent future recurrences.

I heard that there is a gentleman who specializes in repairing these gauges but do not have any contact information for him.

Does anyone have that information, and, if so, can you provide it

Thank You in advance for any assistance.

Get the gauge out from the pod and maybe you can unstuck / fix it......

The Fiero coolant temperature gauge is infamous for "pegging" to its maximum range when the engine is started.

Coolant Temperature Gauge Repair / Fix / Stops from "pegging"

The fix requires swapping two wires on the coolant sensor (GM 25036809) and two wires at the back of the instrument cluster. The result is the ‘Bulb Test’ will light the Coolant Temperature Warning and the Coolant Temperature Gauge will works without "pegging" the maximum range when the engine is started.

Step #1: The coolant temperature sensor has a two-wire electrical connector. One of the wires feeds the gauge and the other feeds the high-temperature warning light. Swap them…

Step #2: Remove the instrument rear cover and requires swapping wire locations C2 #11 with C3 #13. The wire in C2 location #11 is light green / the wire in C3 location #13 is dark green.

Thank you both for your response to my issue.

This continues to be one of my favourite Fiero fixes - cost me nothing but a few minutes of time.

Gauge "stuck" @ 11:00 isn't same problem as pegged when I-key turn to bulb test and start.

those cases pegged hard right to ~ 3:00 above 260°F.

Might be a gauge itself w/ iffy coil(s) but most times the problem is someplace else in the car...
IOW 1 to all Gauges won't work can be many things including "Fuel, Engine Temp or Oil Pressure gauges have problems?" https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/146784.html to dash "back board" has problems and more.
Gauges also peg when the senders are discon for any reason or open/short circuit when bad. Can't remember what side pegged for each issue on temp gauge.

If I was you Kern; disconnect the negative cable from the battery and remove the instrument pod:

5 screws @ the back cover
4 screws @ the bottom cover
4 screws each on the left and right to remove the switches, and disconnect them from the harness

Remove the bottom main bolts from the instrument pod
Remove the top main bolts from the instrument pod

With the instrument pod lose, disconnect the main connectors at the back and get the other harness ends free

With the instrument pod on the bench, you can now work to remove the gauge

As the link says; the coolant temp gauge works as an ohmmeter....

Check-out theogre thread too and maybe you can find the problem....:

Note: Sender or wire to it short to Ground often = stuck on Empty, 0 pressure but on temp gauge 100°F or even "lower" to the left.

If T-gauge never moves then can be someone already "fix" the "wiring problem" peg to the right.
Several ways that is done so don't trust any data saying how to fix.
