Electrical power issue, 1986 SE V6,No power,as if the battery was removed. Whas the most common problem, and how to fix it

I'd start looking at the wiring. Start with the battery cables, and then move on to the smaller wires.

I had this (basic similar) problem a few years ago....Found out that the headlight motors were coming on in the garage, draining the battery- that is not the worst tho; The 1st gen HL motors can get very hot when "Running on" and catch fire.

First thing to do is to disconnect the motors from power and then see if that solves the power drain problem.

Number two, swap over to the later (87-88) HL motor system....You will need a front light harness and HL motor control module...I was able to get one from the Fiero Factory but check your local JYs for 87-88 Fieros. The 87-88 HL motors are still available. Link to Amazon motor site; https://www.amazon.com/gp/p...n_title?ie=UTF8&th=1

I also installed a relay that only applies power to the HL motors when the key is on...So that once you shut down and pull the key, there is no possibility of the motors running on....

Link to thread on installing relay (Note read it all- better ways were discussed farther down in post); https://www.fiero.nl/forum/Forum2/HTML/143215.html

If your battery is good check the power distribution block. It's on the passenger side by the battery. The terminals oxidize causing them to get hot and melt the plastic block. Mine would just shut everything off and then start working again all by itself. Got lucky and found it by accident. If you need one Rodney has them

Also check all the grounds. All it takes is a bad ground to give you a bad day

I'm not sure what the problem is.

Yes, start there. What voltage does a multimeter say it has?

I had exactly the same problem. With guidance from Patrick and forum members, we traced it to ground issues. I installed a ground cable from the power junction ( passenger side of the engine compartment) to the engine block, and the problem went away. Prior to that the engine just quit; , no ignition power, nothing.
